Hi. What is the easy way to root a HTC desire? I want to partition my SD card to get more internal storage. I find most of the stuff I've read just confuses me. Thanks.

Easiest way to get started - http://unrevoked.com/#desire

Thanks. Unrevoked3 failed. Kinda freaked me out when things go wrong. It could see the phone (eventually) but fails to install (i think).

    Use Revolutionary instead:
    http://revolutionary.io/

It worked when Unrevoked wouldn't on my sisters HTC Desire.

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems that revolutionary sets the handset to s-off. When I start the phone holding volume and power it tells me s-off is already set. Should I still run revolutionary?

Did you install HTC sync and then uninstall it? You need the drivers from it but not the program itself

I did install sync, and deleted it afterwards. It was the only way to get Unrevoked3 to see my handset. I'll try it again today.

Actually, seeing as you have s-off, just flash a recovery with fastboot and then you can do whatever you want with regards to roms. You can find a tutorial on xda, there might even be a tool for it so you don't have to use command prompt.

p.s get a decent speed sd card.

i found my desire sluggish when i was running certain roms which installed to it, especially ics roms.
its a great way to free space btw... the rom itself can be installed partly to sd card (which i think they were in my case).
even when you have a partitioned sd card, certain amount of the apps stay on the internal memory, so i found myself struggling with space issues..though nothing like on stock.
    enjoy the stepup :)
sorry i cant remember how to root at this stage anymore

Thanks guys. Do I have to flash a recovery to root? I don't really want to mess about with roms, only root and partition the SD card. Not to confident about all this stuff.

Read this XDA Guide, it has everything you need to know.

If you're partitioning your sd card then I recommend using a 1gb ext partition.

Now here's a top tip for using your ext partition. Trust me, this part is highly recommended. Forget the likes of a2sd, s2sd etc.

What you need is mounts2sd. It's developed by dk_zero-cool, who is a Desire owner.

The important setting when you install is to choose the R-Mount option. You'll barely notice any speed decrease with this option, especially if you have a fast sd card. You also shouldn't have any issues with Google Play store unlike some alternative options.

    Best of luck!
