    Hi

I am the race director for the Gowran AC Stook 10 mile road race. I just wanted to let you know that online registration is available here:

    http://www.runireland.com/events/stook-10-mile-road-race-gowran-kilkenny

Entry is priced at €20 per entry - which we feel is a fair price. Sadly, Kilkenny has not had a well run, good value road race of any stature in recent years and we very much want Stook 10 to be that race.
    • the course has been measured and certified by AAI
    • there will be chip timing
    • online results will be available on the same day
    • the local community will be out in force to support (and the home bakers are already set to provide a mouthwatering range of cakes and sandwiches)
    • there will be three water stations
    • free recovery drink samples from Optimum Nutrition
    • spot prizes from Amphibianking & Altitude
    • something a little special on the medal design
This is a club run race, we have hosted the Leinster masters and novices championships for the last three years in a row and place great emphasis on getting the things that runners want right.

    Main & Team Prizes
    There will be 3 winners prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male & Female (€150,€75, €50). There will also be prizes for M40, M45, M50 plus F40, F45 & F50.

Athletic club teams will have the opportunity to race for the Liam Kealy perpetual shield, awarded to the leading mixed team (2 men and 2 women to score). The leading team will also win €100.00 There is no need to enter a team, just declare your club at registration.

    King & Queen of Stook
The first man and woman over Stook Hill who do not win a main or category prize will win an Altitude gift voucher and a very small amount of glory.

    Spot Prizes
Thanks to our sponsors we have loads of quality athletic gear to giveaway as spot prizes!
    Directions
The race starts from Dungarvan Church (not the dungarvan in waterford), 3 miles south of Gowran village, which is 15 minutes drive from J7 on the M9 motorway. There will be changing facilities, refreshments, sandwiches and cake for all in the parish hall afterwards!

All proceeds from the race go to the juvenile members of Gowran AC and Young Ireland’s GAA Club. Visit facebook.com/gowranac to find out more about our athletic club on our facebook

If i can be of any help - just let me know.

Good luck with the race Simon - are there entries on race day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭ASIMON0V

    hey Dom, thanks a million.

There will be registration on the morning of the race from 9:30am onwards in the parish hall. We are also having a pre-registration evening on the 15th (Thursday before) for local runners and on the 8th (the week before that) at the watershed track for Kilkenny city based runners.

Here is the route map with elevation profile.

nice looking profile if you could flatten out the TWO MILE long hill!!!
whats the storey with the entry if your part of a club team for the all county 10 miler? been run in conjunction with this race. its usually only 2 euro for the county board races

thanks - that's why we chose it. hopefully it will be a cracker of a race and reasonably tactical rather than just a straight threshold blowout. We very much want people to come away feeling that they dug deep but it was worth it - sure isn't that why we all run??

I don't know about the 2euro for the county board, but i'd imagine its unlikely you'll have to pay that as well. i know for some people it will not be ideal that the county championship road race is tied up with a race that costs €20 to enter - but it will be a one off and i think their hand was somewhat forced with the all-ireland replay. Also, I have run these county races over the past number of years and numbers are very low. How many people were at the county 10K this summer- was there even 15 in it / maybe 8 in the womens?

If it is any consolation, we've very much focused on keeping costs as low as possible and this is not a commercial race - in that our proceeds are going to getting training kit for our underage squad. As i said above, it would be good for Kilkenny to have a race or two of this stature - i'd hope that as many athletes in kilkenny as possible would come out to take part and enjoy it - before we do battle at the senior xc in december.

I'm originally from Gowran and all the best to all participants and organisers for this event. Hope all of you have a great day weather wise for it. A fairly challenging course too but you'll all do well.

i would agree that the turn out for the county 10km's is a joke and it should be run in conjunction with say the Stoneyford 10km - its by far the biggest race in kilkenny at the moment with 400 odd runners and 100 or so walkers... first prize in Stoneyford is 250euro as well....
hopefully people will turn out in Dungravan. reg on the day is important as a lot of people leave it until the last min to decide . it would also set people up nicely for the waterford half in Dec.

What i can never understand is why such low numbers turn out for the county road races yet bigger numbers turn up at the county xc everyyear.I raced the county 10mile last year and it was so disapointing the turnout maybe perhaps no prizemoney was on offer compared to the likes of the newly stoneyford 10k event! I train my ass off week in week out and to be honest athletics does not get a look in around here as we live in such a GAA dominated environment which gets all the attention and interest and i dont see it changing.Clubs like gowran and stoneyford deserve huge credit for trying to bring big road racing events to the county. The more events we can prmote locally the more interest it will bring to the sport and get more involved.

I am going to be out running the course this Saturday morning if anyone would like to check it out. Starting at 10am in the morning. For anyone doubting the fast finish; here's a photo from Stook Hill down to the finish at the church in the village :)

The stook 10 finisher cowbells have landed; that only leaves the small matter of a 10 mile race between you and yours.

Pleased to announce that the legend who is village runner will be pacing 75' at Stook. He'll be there to motivate you up the hill and reward you with rothman's and purple snacks afterwards. In the interest of balance there will also be a non-smoking 90' pacer available as well.

Up until now, I would have said that you hadn't put a foot wrong. Who's going to carry village runner up the hill? ;)

Quick update; lots of entries in now through runireland which is closing tonight. There will be entry on the day in Dungarvan Village Hall from 10-00 to 11-30, but sadly cowbells are limited...

I am really pleased to say we now have a 65' pacer on board (who just happens to be the current irish national 10,000m champion) so that should be an interesting one for any speedsters coming along - great company on the run and a chance to outkick Brian with 50m to go and get a photo of it.

weather forecast is good; should be cool with little breeze and clear views from Stook.

If travelling from dublin leave 60' to get to j7 and 15 min from there, from waterford just allow 35' in total

Great Race today on a challenging course !

Thankfully the rain held off until i finished :)

It was well organised but im a bit disappointed that they ran out of medals :(

Even still i enjoyed it and i would do it again if its on next year

Well done to all the organisers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭thirstywork2

Has to be in my top 10 races just a pity im not in shape to do it justice.
Some serious climbs but the last 2 miles where epic.
love my new cow bell :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭ASIMON0V

Glad you enjoyed it TW; you guys added to the buzz, might need to separate you from the kids with a fence next year. ...Cowbell's are in train trevor.. Well done to mithril for winning m45.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭mithril

I really enjoyed the race, even though I struggled more than I expected onthe final hill. DCM seems to be out of the legs, but I think a little too muchwine might have been consumed since then! I thought the winning time from GaryO'Hanlon was awesome considering the course. Nice, well organized, event with alot of local support, and massive spread afterwards. Hope to be back again.

Would liked to have run this, hearing nothing but good reports. Any race that gives out cowbells for medals is ok by me. Dont fear the reaper and all that........

Really enjoyed the coarse.I ran it at tempo pace in 58.16 (52.44) is my pb on the flat as i was not fully right after the recent injurys but heck the hill was more of a drag than i imagined and the downhill was pretty awesome. It's certainly not a coarse you would aim to improve your pb but it's certainly one for the calender next year please god.My ears were actually popping on the hill section so that said it all and when i saw the church wayyyyyyyy down in the valley i knew then what a climb it was.
Great to hear its gonna be staged again next year and hopefully have even more numbers out in force.
