I don't think it really matters. Personal choice really.

    Agreed

I suppose if ye wanted to have an arguement about it you could argue that the animals spend more time in the field than the road so it would make more sense to have the staples on the field side as if an animal pushes against the wire then they wouldn't push the staple out

I suppose the counter arguement is that animals in the paddock as much less likely to be bunched when up near the wire so they are unlikely to push against the wire - whereas with the road they might bunch up and push against it and if the staple is on the inside then it will push in

    God this is tricky stuff

Actually 1 thing that will make a difference is if you are putting up dividing or flex wires on a regular basis

If you are tying them onto the roadway wire then you will want the staple on the roadway side so that as you strain the flex wire your not pulling the staple out

Roadway gets my vote - maybe a poll is required

Primary reason for the fence I'm assuming is to keep your stock in the field, so wire on paddock side, less chance of pulling staples if wire comes under pressure.

my question would be more along the line of which side of the wire to put the post....

For this reason and possibly looks better I'm inclined to go with roadway side however it seems a matter of choice.

    I'd put the wire the field side, where stock spend most time;
If not the stock will rub/stratch off the stakes & loosen them

Depends on whether the run is straight or curved. If straight, then on the field side. If the wire run is curved, then on the opposite side of the curve, so that it is the post that is holding the wire tension not the staple. So field side, for concave field, and road side for convex field. If that makes sense.

If these were field shapes, for example.

I used to think that I used to over-think things sometimes...

After reading this thread, I don't think that anymore

I think on a straight stretch it would make little difference.. Where there is a bend I would always have it on the outside of the posts to ensure the steples are just locating the wire rather than pulling it into the post..

field side if possible. curves and bend taken into consideration. any i have with the posts field side get animals scratching off them . also from a council point of view( if your taking out a hedge) they prefer posts on the road side so that if a car hits it it wont bounce back onto the road .(more for concrete posts and rail though) though it looks nicer with the wire outside;)

What happens of you put a wire both sides, that way everyone is happy:pac::pac::pac:

I say field side, though it makes little difference when you consider a fence between two fields it is on one or other side and that's just that.

I can't believe that there is a thread about this on boards.:o Who cares where you stick the fuppin wire.

If there is a bend in the roadway, put the wire on the side of the posts so that when it is strained it will not pop the staples out. If it is straight put it on the roadway side as cattle are more likely to bunch on the roadway, if they are in the field unless it is 2 bulls fighting it is highly unlikely that the staples will pop out.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Along with the shape of the field (convex/concave) it should depend on the type of wire and the type of road.... basically is a health and safety issue also... if road public then you should not use barbed wire... if the wire your using is plain wire then from a H&S point of view there is no issue... back to the shape of the field and figuring out which side of the fence there is going to be more stock pressure from... if all other things equal, then i would go with whichever side is easier!

It depends on existing fence. If its a hedge, trim back hedge and fence on field side. If its a stone wall, I would try and put some stakes into wall and put some on outside if it helped to keep fence straight and if its an existing wire fence , you will judge best when you are doing the job.

If it was subject to a planning application, the wire would be on the field side, so as to give way much more easily in the event of a collision, though for aesthetics, the road side would probably take it......
As if you needed anymore " good ideas"

I must say lads the response has been tremendous ! All your suggestions have been taken into account and all scenarios catered for even the ones which are once in a lifetime event. I challenge any animal to break this fence now!
