I was signed up already so hopefully it'll be good. Nice flat course anyway, if the weather plays its part. Did anybody do this last year?

Hi , re the Cork event

how many people do you expect to take part?

Just a comment on the route:

the section of the route from Acadamy street through Paul Street is vey narrow and uneven and there are drains quite far out into the street. The surface is cobblestones, which are lose in parts.
There are also bollards accross the footpath at the acadamy street side

More bollards where Cormarket street meets Kyle street, very narrow junction and high kerbs.

Will all the roads on the route be closed?

I've nothing to do with the race other than I'll be partaking in it. I just went looking for a thread on it and couldn't find one so I started one :)

But to answer your question in terms of numbers according to the cork running blog

There was a large turnout of 442 runners for this charity run in Cork City yesterday evening. There were 168 in the 5k race while 274 took part in the 10k.

I assume given the city centre route that all the roads will be closed

From reading the blog last years event went down the centre park road which isnt ideal for a night event but this route is far better light wise.

I take your point with academy st and paul street

That's interesting about the new route, I did the 10k last year which was four laps around the Marina. Will take a walk along those streets next weekend to check it out.

Was a nice atmosphere there last year so a good one to enter.

Can't really figure out the course, the mapmyrun site is quite confusing.

Am thinking of doing this as my first "proper" 5km run, nice and flat. Having never done something similar am just wondering if the streets are closed or is it run on a coned off area of the street?

In same boat with Dublin version but sent them an email and they replied saying some scope for late manual entries today at number collection point. So went in and managed to get a late entry.

Sitting in work, and our office is right beside the start, so can venture down at the last minute and not have to freeze to death with the plebs outside :)

The event in Cork went really well tonight, huge crowd there, way more than last year. Weather was as good as could be hoped as well.

Did something to my knee at a race last Sunday so ended up jogging around the 10k route with a friend of mine even though I'd entered the 5k so I'm guessing my result might not be the best but whatever as I really enjoyed the whole event :)

That's handy alright. Actually it was very mild this evening and wasn't cold at all even though we were hanging around for ages before they started us off.

New PB for me so delighted. Itt was very congested though. Some poor girl in front of me on North Wall Quay just after the bridge went flying and had a nasty fall. I stopped to try help her up before the stewards piled in. Hope she was ok.

Did this in Dublin last night. It was some sight to behold as the red LED snake flashed it's way around the Docklands. It was really atmospheric and I was glad to be there.

However there were a couple of things that irked me.

A 25 minute delay, not cool. Anyone know what the reason was?

No distance signage and staggered starts and finishes not clearly marked. Lots of other fancy stuff but the basics were neglected I thought. 5 portaloos for 5000 people.

Severe congestion, I have no idea how someone didn't get injured. Thanks to the dude whose dog, which he was running with, squatted down and took a very messy dump on the Samuel Beckett bridge, I'm sure there's lots of runners with that on their shoes this morning.

It was very much a fun run but I'm happy I did it and hope it raised lots of much needed funds for Mark.

Well done on the PB RR!

Seems the Dublin chip times are off. Got my time texted to me last night and it was a minute out.

Mine was almost exactly same as garmin. Did u turn on your watch at the balloon thing which looked like the start but wasn't? Lots of people confused with that. Start line was bit beyond that.

My text was 20 minutes out!! Ran the 5k under 25 mins and got a text congratulating me on my 45:xx finish! New PB by almost 90 secs according to my garmin so would like an offical time!! Delay at start seemed to be caused by the cops as far as I could see, just before the actual start a cop came down the road on a motorcycle and told the stewart at the start they were clear to start.

That's really bad. No excuse forthat at all. It was an expensive race so basics like that should not be wrong. Well done on the pb!

Yup, started it bang on the timing mats.

+1 on severe congestion issues being a large problem [in Dublin].

The start being where it was, was stupid and I really thought someone would get hurt. Having to "choke" the crowd going around from Benson st onto the quay makes no sense at all, and then choke the crowd a different way because the timing mat was not big enough was also stupid.

I know its a charity race, but there were too many people doing it for how the start was organised where it was.

I also almost killed a couple of people when charging off from the start, and a load of people stopped dead after 200m or so, when they stopped at another mat, what turned out to be the finish line :)

+1 on the time delay being annoying, a few minutes I can handle but that was bad. I really hope it was not to let the Fit Squad guy get his time to jump on and down for 10 mins :)

On the plus side, good course which I enjoyed :)

Delay was caused by the protest that was on in Dublin yesterday eve, announcement was made by loudhailer up near the top but obviously didn't filer back - I assume it was the Guards that held it back.

+1 though on the clowns who started up near the front and caused a bit of a mess once they made their initial burst and then faded off rapidly resulting in alot of dodging and handbrakers at the last second - granted a fun run and all but there's a place for everyone

Chip time and watch time pretty much bang on so no issues there

Enjoyed the run immensely though once I got into my stride and will definitely come back next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

I was about a 1/3 of the way back, and did not hear a single thing anyone announced tbh - we could hear something was being announced but not what was being said...

I found the start completely congested (as everyone said it was a fun run but for the entry fee price a bit of planning was the least to expect). Toilet situation was absolutely terrible. Also the delay at the start. Protest was outside the Dail i thought so not sure how that could have affected anything.

Also the filtering process on certain parts of the course was quite frankly dangerous. Numerous times i had to "hit the brakes" to stop myself from hitting other runners (this happens in all races but the narrowing of the course certainly didn't help). Overall i'm really glad to have taken part if for nothing else than the view of all the red armbands snaking around the city center. Would definitely do it again but the organisers need to prepare a bit better i think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭dcr22B

The delay was communicated many times over the loudspeaker, I was down at the back of the State Street building.

I wasn't texted a time myself (not sure if I had actually ticked that option or not) but Sportstracker did the job for me and ended up being 5 minutes quicker than the target time I had set myself (granted I am a novice at road racing so was generous with the target time).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 anotherrunner

RE Dublin: Think it would have been a better event without the chip timing.

Either they should have gone to the trouble of organising a race (which takes more effort and for 5,000 people requires staggered starts) or just had a really excellent fun run.

Bringing people back to Benson St to collect the goodie bags was laughable - it was like they were trying to create congestion? How were people supposed to get out of there except back up Hanover Quay against those still running.

Nice evening for a run though.

Did anyone else find the times to be slightly off? I found what I recorded myself to be a bit quicker (by a couple of minutes).

My garmin recorded 44:20 and my chip time (received via text message) was 44:13. I'm pretty sure I started and stopped my watch at the correct locations so not sure how they chopped 7 secs off my time, but won't complain eitherway seeing that I knocked 38 secs off my previous PB without a whole pile of prep! (only had 5 days to prepare, as I stood in for my mate who has a chest infection)

I'm sure there were plenty of PBs out there considering the flat course and perfect weather conditions.

Have to agree with most of the comments regarding congestion. Its hard to beat wave starts (i.e. everyone provides their estimated finish time when they enter online, and are then given their number with a colour code, and hence have to stand within their coloured zone at the start line) - maybe its not the norm for fun runs?, but considering that 5,000 people took part it would have made a hell of a difference.

Overall though the organisation was streets ahead of last years event in Trinity where I found the course very dangerous IMO.

Hi, My times were out by at least 8 mins. I did the 5k in 26 mions and my chip text was 34. And 34 was the time i came over the finish line at but i had been far down the back and started my own watch. SO maybe the chip never picked up my start time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Doinker

My chip time and garmin time are 4 second apart so can't complain there.

Not a fan of the two distances over the same course as the faster 10k runners are dodging the slower 5k runners for the last 3k. Especially when the 5k runners are running in a line 4 people wide!!

Thought it was a bit of a shambles regarding giving out the goodie bag. It was a bit of a free for all with no real queuing system, which resulted in people blocking the footpath and spilling out onto the road. Other races have a funnel system where, after crossing the finishing line, runners are funnelled along by stewards in a segregated area, away from the finishing line and given their goodie bad as they exit. This removes congestion from the finish line and ensure an orderly distribution of the goodie bags.

Other than that it was a good run. Fair play to all involved.

I was lucky to get there early and be up the front for the start, there were backmarkers alright for the end of my 10k, to be expected I guess. Maybe the marshalls could have been telling people to keep to the left if not overtaking or something. Also, the lack of distance markers were annoying. Even if they had a marshall at each of the KM marker shouting out "2km", "4km" etc it would have been great.

That's nitpicking tho, absolutely great event. Very worth the entry fee, race right in the city centre, on a perfect night for running - beat my PB by over 3mns (44:50 down to 41:28), will definitely be back

Very frustrating that the times uploaded on the site for Dublin are the race times and not the chip times - added over a minute and a half to my time

    :(

Not sure if that's the issue. My chip and gun time would be identical but time is still a min out.

Minor thing given the reason why I ran it. Very enjoyable jaunt around the docks.

My result is not even listed ! I wonder if it is due to fact that I was late entry? Although that shouldn't have made a difference as I had the chip tag ??

I have my garmin record at least.

They obviously fecked the whole thing up for the Dublin chips and times. The results were only posted late this evening whereas they had the results from other venues up much earlier in the day. Big mess

I can't even find my time on the website and I made sure that my chip was properly installed on my laces etc

Not impressed! The results page should have a search function or can somebody let me know how to search for it?

Looks like other venues done my championchipireland and Dublin done by redtagtiming so different companies might explain that. Searched spreadsheet though and can't find my name. Send an email query so will see what comes of that. At end of day I know what time I did anyway and I enjoyed the run so won't get too upset about it.

The people who were accommodated on the night in Cork as late entries and changes due to postal problems have now had their names added to the results. Sorry for the delay but only got the file today. Revised results on www.championchipireland.com

Great night, lovely atmosphere for a run, great group of helpers to work with.
