my 00' 320D has had the battery light come on and off for the past few weeks and there was no other changes. Today it came on and stayed on constantly then on the way home it went off again. Can't make it to mechanic today, is it ok to drive or should I park up? And is it possibly the alternator?

I believe I answered this last time - when you mentioned the battery light. If not - I'm gonna make a sticky out of this.

The battery light means your alternator is no longer working.

The battery light doesn't mean the battery is dead - yet.. but if you try driving with the light on - it will be shortly since it's now providing all the power the car's electrical system requires.

RULE: If the battery light comes on. Pull over to the first safe spot you can and call Roadside Assistance (or AAA or whoever you have for towing) and get the car flatbedded to a dealer. It is not going to get better by itself. It is not the battery that's bad it's the ALTERNATOR.

Call a tow truck and have your car towed to the dealer - and your battery is now dead (not "fine also") and hopefully hasn't been permanantly damaged due to running without a working alternator.
