Ok folks i'm just about to purchase a new ps3 and i'm just wondering what peoples advise is. My launch model has gone YLOD so looking to get a replacement. I was going to do down the reballing route but a 100 seems like a lot especially with some of the deals on the super slims in HMV. (The 300 euro bundle with fifa uncharted and gran turismo is class)

Please vote to help me decide :-)

Which PS3 to replace my launch model? 28 votes

    You answered your own question.
What if more people suggested reballing, but you didn't want to do that, would you reball anyway?
Do you use the bc of the launch model at all? If yes, then reball.
If no, buy the cheapest replacement.

I've always spouted on about BC on the launch model but in truth i never use it so i can lose it. I still have a ps2 if i really need to play any old games. I was leaning towards getting new PS3 as imo the 100 to reball (and i'd also be buying fifa so thats say 160) is pretty expensive for something that i'm hearing lots of conflicting reports over i.e. reballing only lasting 6 months etc.

For another 140 i can get a brand new console thats smaller quieter (also cheap looking) and have two games to sell on if needs be.

Suppose my real question is if posters were buying a new ps3 today would they get the slim or super slim?

Reball the Launch Model. Slims are no stranger to YLOD's, & I'd be amazed if the Super Slims were any different. A reballed PS3 {assuming its done correctly}, will replace the bargain basement solder used at manufacturing level with proper leaded solder which should last far longer than any new replacement.

Again thats assuming its done correctly, AND assuming the YLOD is fixable by a reball. Not all YLOD's are related to solder/cpu/gpu :)

Just an update folks, I ended up going with the slim 320GB got a good deal in HMV. I decided the super slim was too flimsy looking. The slim is whisper quiet and a more manageable size compared to the phat. Cheers for all the advise
