Has anybody tried out the Sony PMW 200, is it worth hiring one to find out, and where would be a good place to hire from? :)

    Hi RickGibb

Had a look at the PMW-200 in Amsterdam recently at IBC... nice looking piece of kit especially if you’re after the 'Holy Grail' of 50mbs 422 in camera.

Have you checked out Alister Chapman's review?
    http://www.xdcam-user.com/reviews/review-of-the-sony-pmw-200/

Also he has some side by side footage of PMW-100, 150 and 200 at IBC:

If you were thinking of hiring one I would recommend the guys over at Camerakit.ie also known as D+P Multimedia in Terenure. In fact they are holding a PMW-200 event on the 17th... will be heading to it myself as i'm planning on getting a PMW-200 soon.

Hope thats of some help to ya...

    Mike

Mike gave some good links that are worth looking at, they give all the info you need on this camera and since Im connected to the hire department that Mike mentioned I will pass on end user comments as they come in, personally I thought PMW 200 was a little Z7 ish in feel compared to the more chunky EX1R, (please excuse me, I am a little influenced by aesthetics), what's important is the practicalities of use and results.

in the meantime standby for field user comments on this camera.

    Regards Jim

    Thanks guys, that's useful information.
If the PMW-200 is anything like the Sony EX1 or Z7 It should be a pleasure to use. It's great to have the 4:2:2 higher-quality image in a smaller sized camera; the larger cameras do my shoulder in.

I have to shoot a couple of interview contributors next week so I'll hire it out and check it out ...I'll post some feedback on what I think of the camera after the shoot.

    Thanks again, Rick

    Hi,

Just came across this PMW-200 'test' video... http://vimeo.com/50787342

There is nice comparison with the EX1R which in itself is still an excellent camera. I was even considering buying one and adding an Atmos samurai because it delivers such outstanding images along with its proven track record.

But then there is the advantage of the in camera 50mb 4:2:2 and obviously improved picture quality and better sensitivity to consider with the PMW-200…. So couple that with the external recorder and record to ProRes or DNxHD and the results should be awesome especially for a camera with its price tag.

Look forward to hearing about people’s views on this camera.

    Mike
