On National roads something new has been appearing.

It started off with a layby just big enough for a car of van to pull in, the tarmac is coloured green.

Then a grey metal box appeared on these, it is connected to a wind turbine and solar panel.

On the road across from the box there is a magnetic sensotr buried underneath the tarmac. (the kind that is buried at traffic lights to let the programme know that a car is at a junction)

I don#t have a pic... what are these things?

Base stations for speed vans (where they can avail of a safe parking space, and free electricity???)

No apparently they are new weather stations for measuring temps winds rainfall etc. They are nationwide and the lay by is for service vehicles to use. Now that wouldn't stop Garda vehicles from using these areas IF it was safe and legal to do so.

    From the recent thread
These lay by's are for service vehicles as in anything from drain service vehicles, motorway repair vehicles, sign repair vehicles communication vehicles and motorway/ highway service vehicles.

Most of these are been put in close to service terminals and LED road signs as a safety issue to keep the vehicles and staff off the hard shoulder.

Saw some are designed to let the grass grow up so looks the same as the rest of the grass verge

There's plenty of suggestions there, some of the laybys seem to be in unlikely spots for ANYTHING camera or service vehicles. Not sure why we suddenly need so many weather stations either!
