As far as I know VGA is a old school analog connection, whereas HDMI is digital and the two aren't compatible, you'd need to buy a converter.

What you could do is use component cables that's the red white and, can't remember the third colour, but that will use a basic adapter to go from VGA and will carry sound.

    Hi lads,

I want to connect my PC to my HDTV but not quite sure what to do. The TV is 1080p and the computer is a HP with Windows XP Professional.

This is the model of the computer; HP Compaq dx2200 Microtower PC - overview and features

    This is the TV; http://www.currys.ie/Product/Digihome-32-Full-HD-LCD-TV-with-integrated-Saorview-DIGIHOME/310950/339.6

The TV has a VGA port and a HDMI port, the computer only has a VGA port and no HDMI port.

Is it a matter of running a VGA cable from the computer to the VGA port on the TV and setting up an audio (red and white?) cable as well.

There are 12 different resolutions for PC input, would resolution 1024x768 with the frequency set at 60Hz be the ideal?

    Any advice really appreciated.
You need to run a VGA cable from the TV to the VGA port of the laptop.
You'd be able to get one of these off most old monitors (can usually be disconnected from the monitor)
Then you'll generally need to run a cable from your "Speakers out" to a line in on the TV (if the TV hasn't one then you'll need to get a line out to red/white adapter or to be honest the easiest option is to get a set of external speakers for the laptop and just run the line out (speakers out) to the speakers.
You may also need to tell your laptop to push out video via the external VGA port (usually via pressing the FN key and one of the "F" keys) and set the source on the TV to receive signal on the VGA/PC port.

You wont get great quality but it'll be perfectly adequate.

EDIT: Sorry misread there, its not a laptop you have so the bit about the FN keys isnt relevant.
    Everything else stands.

If you do want to do HD you can buy USB to HDMI converters but they can be pricy (80 quid) but I dont see why you would really need one.

Or you could buy one of these, install it an use HDMI for Video & Audio
