    Heys guys,

I started this thread here because I have no idea where else to ask this. Basically, I will probably be moving to New York in the next 2 years and would love to work in an airport there, such as gound crew and baggage handlers etc. Do any of you know how easy/hard it is to get those types of jobs there??

    Any help or advice welcome!

you might start of by explaining your situation - are you a US passport/work permit/visa holder? Things are not that quite simple - now I would imagine it would be a lot simpler if you would aim for a highly qualified position at pilot/engineering department but I don't believe they will just give a low-qualified job to an any foreigner that comes to their doorstep

I used to work at JFK as part of my internship for Swissport and worked under theyIr Aer Lingus contract, call into building 151 Swissport and o up to the third floor and give ur details and they will tell you what jobs they have

    Thanks for the reply.

Nope, I dont hold any visas or work permits and I'm not a US citizen..although the better half is. The only qualifications I have apart from Leaving Cert is two FETAC level 5 certificates (one in Travel and Tourism) which I suspect wont be of any use. Will it be very hard to aquire the necessary visas to enable me to work there, in particular the airport?

Are these jobs in New York? Do they look for certain qualifications?

I think your major focus should be on getting a work visa for the USA. Once you have that then you can look at what you want to do with yourself.

I imagine like any airport there are plenty of low level jobs to be had. But don't restrict yourself to JFK there are plenty of airports in the New York area. Not all major airports but General Aviation airfields have opportunities in the likes of FBOs where you can be a refueller etc.

On the visa front. Just because the better half is an American citizen doesn't mean it'll be easy, quick or cheap to get a Green card even if you are married. Suggest both of you should be looking into that right now.

There's also the question of security clearances. You'll need to have been squeaky clean for that.

I was thinking along the lines of JFK, Newark and La Guardia because they're the busiest and (I'm assuming??) easiest to commute to. I'm open to other airports though if there are jobs going.

I should have clarified that 'the better half' is not my wife but my girlfriend (although we'll probably marry in the future), so getting visas and what not I suspect will be very difficult for me, given my qualifications..or lack of. Anyway, as long as I know that there are definitely jobs to be had in the airports then at least thats something to work towards.

As for security clearances, I've been a good boy all my life so that wont be a problem!

No visa, no work. Definitely not airside at an airport. Even trying what might be called more "unconventional" routes to employment in the USA wouldn't be the smartest idea...
