Disclamer: I don't consider myself in any way a hardcore gamer, expect me not to know the seemingly obvious!!

Well, iv'e recently finished my latest playthrough of Deus Ex and i'm looking for something new. I'm looking for suggestions of zombie games, but i'm a picky bastard :D
anyway, just for fun, iv'e made a little checklist and if people out there know of any zombie games that hit a decent amount of them, please let me know.

    post-apocalyptic setting.

    survival horror

traditional, slow-moving zombies trying to eat my brains, no alien-parasite b.s. (thank you Cold Fear)

outdoorsey, town/city stuff, no super-secret underground lab bollix

playable character is just some random guy, doesn't have to be some sort of god-among-men space marine on earth.

so, is it a pipe dream or is there a game for me? thanks for any suggestions :)

If you're interested in playing online, and willing to accept buggy game-play - then Day Z is quite the game.

    Left 4 Dead, obviously

Yes, Left4Dead (1 + 2)is the one you want, however, the "slow moving" zombies doesn't really apply, they are fast, but only become active when you make them aware. :)

    There is also Resident Evil 2/3 , and 4 and 5 :P ,
Depends there if you want 3rd person action/adventure, or 1st Person shooter

Your final alternative is Dead Island ;)

People will mention DayZ, but its not at all what you are looking for

Well dayZ is defenetly more what op is looking for then left 4 dead.
Left 4 dead is pure arcade trollolololol stuff.
Even "killing floor" would apply more to OP then left 4 dead.

    Throwing in an alternative:

If you don't mind something low-key but equally as fun as more high profile zombie games, id recommend Zombie Panic: Source.

It's player controlled Survivors AND player controlled Zombies. If you die as a human by a zombie you are revived as a zombie. Aim of the game (depending on the map) is very usually the zombies have to kill every survivor or the survivors have to either: A) survive long enough or B) Kill the zombies until their spawn points are zero

You can get infected by the main zombie so even if you don't die you might turn into a zombie.

It's very survival based, although compared to something like Day Z it's quite linear because of individual maps and goals. But you do have to scavenge for weapons, armor or anything to barricade yourself into a location.

Zombies (or if you play as one) are slowish moving. They don't walk/shamble or run but kind of an inbetween. Slow enough not to be running but also fast enough so that if you are playing as a zombie it isn't frustratingly slow.

Good enough amount of weapons - at least about 4 types of handguns and a revolver, AK47, M4 and three types of shotguns. There's also plenty of Melee weapons also. (there's possibly more firearms but can't think off hand)

All you need to run the game is a Source engine game like Half-Life 2, Counter Strike Source or even just the Source Development Kit. Either way it's a free mod

Project zomboid is still in development, but the game is amazing.

Among the best zombie games I've ever played.

Yep this is also looking a to be a great zombie game when its fully released (or if you buy now you can access beta). Bought my copy ages ago as well so can't wait for it to be fully finished :)

I think Dead Island would fit that bill pretty well, it's a fantastic zombie FPS RPG, as a huge zombie fan I absolutely loved it, put about 60 hours into it. Left4Dead is also a great game but it's a linear arcade FPS shooter, really.

The walking dead. Its pretty much point and click but the story is fantastic.

Dead Island, great game, would suit your criteria

Not strictly speaking zombie but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series sounds right up your alley of games (series should come with spare underwear) with huge mod support...

I enjoyed Zombie Master a lot more than ZP.
In ZM players have to co-operate to reach a specific goal (like gather all of the parts to fix a car). One person plays as the zombie master, he basically gets to be the director in L4D - spawing zombies and triggering events.

Never found playing as a zombie in ZP to be fun.

not zombies, but Fallout 3 would certainly tick a few of the OP's boxes I think ?

With PC mods? Maybe a few more ticked boxes.

I liked Zombie Master as well but I thought Zombie Panic: Source was alot more complete. It does have its own great uniqueness though being able to command and direct zombies and events.

To be honest I don't think alot of people like playing as a zombie in Zombie Panic :D (a few do though). Nearly everyone spams the F1 button when a new round starts :)

You can get mods for Fallout 3 that add more of the ghouls (literally everywhere they are) and change their animations so they shamble rather than run. You can get another mod that adds actual zombies to the game and has them nearly everywhere in the gameworld

DayZ is terrifying but not because of the zombies, they are more of a nuisance than anything else. As someone mentioned above, S.T.A.L.K.E.R would seem to be pretty close to what the OP is looking for.
