Right lads, just replaced my derailleur and next on the lsit is a new chain and cassette.

I currently have a 12-25 cassette and would rather have more tange, maybe 11-28 or 12-28.

I have a medium cage Sora mech.

Question is, can I use a mountain bike cassette with a road derailleur. Say a shimano 11-28 for example.

Also, will Sram cassettes work with shimano derailleurs?

    yes. 12-28 is not mtb

    But 11-28 is :).

So yed, I could use a 11-28 mtd cassette with a sora derailleur?

What about using a sram cassette?

Any what would be the biggest sprocket I could go to with a medium cage derailleur?

Yes you can use an 11-28 cassette. Mountain bike cassettes don't really differ from road bike cassettes apart from how they are marketed.

Yes you could also use a sram cassette or any other cassette that uses the shimano/sram spacing. Only campagnolo differs really (although you might find third party cassettes designed for campag spacing but they'll state this clearly).

So this cassette would work with my medium cage sora?

But would it take this bigger shimano?

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67295 <---?

And would a regular 8 speed chain be ok with either of those cassettes?

SRAM do an Apex 11-32 cassette! I doubt though it would work with anything except a SRAM set-up.

I always use an SRAM cassette on my otherwise Shimano equipped mountain bikes (XT and XTR) so that shouldn't be a problem. No reason (as far as I know) why you shouldn't use an MTB cassette on a road bike but you need to check whether your Sora Medium cage will accept a 28 tooth large sprocket!

And Shimano do an 11-30 in 9 speed and a 12-30 in 10 speed.

Why do you have an 8 speed chain, and how many gears do you currently have? Putting a 9 or 10 sprocket cassette on an 8 sprocket index system still leaves you with 8 usable gears, and the chain may be too wide for the sprocket spacing and either not work at all or work badly.

You could get an 8 speed hg41 in 11-30, but don't know if the medium cage would cope with it.

Yeah I wouldn't be too sure either, but seeing as sram and shimano indexing is the same I could get a sram 11-28, which it will definitely take 28.

I found something online that says that Shimano's declared capacity for their derailleur's is a follows.

    Long Cage = 45(t)
    Medium cage = 33(t)

cap req'd (T) = (BIG ring - small ring) + (BIG cog - small cog)

    For me it's:
    53 - 39 = 14
    28 - 11 = 17

    Giving me a T of 31.

So I should be safe, and could even go for a 30 tooth cassette, in theory... but I don't think I'd need it and it might be a bit gappy!

    Yeah it will be fine.

I've used a 30t cassette with a medium cage sora derailleur in the past and it was happy.

Just had to adjust the hanger screw (I can't remember the real name) to make it hang lower?

    Possibly, can't remember now.
