We have a 79 year old neighbour who, God love her, is mad as a bag of spiders. She has fallen out with nearly everybody at this stage. because we're soft we myself and the old lad still give her a hand from time to time. we were testing them yesterday and it was a hairy experience. It was the second attempt having failed before to round them up before.
The handeling facilitys were how shall we say.... basic.
Some of the cattle were down right dangerous. Luckily the vet had enough cop on to realise that it wasnt worth somebody getting killed and we let 3 cows out without testing.
we had to tag "calves" that were up to 10 months old

These cattle are half starved, they are all inbred and will all die in debt. not only that but I have no doubt that they will kill her one day. She was found stuck in the mud in the "yard" last winter. only another neighbour called in she could well have died there. she was 3 hours in the muck. he had to undress her and cut the wellies off her. instead of thanking him for saving her life he got a call demanding that he pay for new wellies from him.

None of the transporters want to take her cattle and the mart dread to see her cattle coming. of course she wont listen to any of this. She thinks they are grand quite cattle.

For the sake of both her and her animals the Vet & Department need to close down the herd and dispose of all the animals... There is no point in it continuing..

    Very sensible of him/her.

If he/she were to report them as untested because of lack of facilities, it might seem cruel, but would actually be doing all concerned a major favour.

I agree 100% but they are afraid to do so. This is a woman that broght a man to court for cutting her hedges (as asked) and then blamed him for an animal getting blackleg. She gives solisitors letters like confetti.

and what happens then with these wild cattle??

I have being involved in a few such cases and regularly can be sorted out with mediation. in the last instance firstly we managed to get a test completed on the land (the farmer never had a test) got the animals tagged and guessed the ages :D, everyone kept telling the old boy that he best cut down on numbers and eventually he sold all the bulls, then we (group of locals) started feeding the cattle for him during winter etc and eventually kinda took over doing all the farming for the old boy. took awhile to get all the paperwork sorted but got their in the end. the herd is now destocked which is best for man and beast

how come people with cattle/facilities like this never get a random inspection from the department:confused: also if she is claiming sfp etc, with calves not being tagged and crap facilities i am sure she would be in trouble

We all kinda think "only round here this could go on!" but seems its countrywide ... Near me, lady vet was standing up in a yard (no crush) and fella took offence to her natural complaints about the handling facilities and he went to the house and came back with the shotgun!! Poor girl some introduction to TB testing , not long out of college etc Gardai called and all ... Big Scene

    Agree.
Had a similar case locally a few years back and the department fed the cattle before eventually removing them following reports. The man was not well and was not capable of looking after the cattle.

Disturbing thing about the whole affair was the "concerned neighbours" who arrived at the scene the morning the cattle were being taken away shouting abuse at the dept guys for interfering.
So much for animal welfare - and most of these idiots were of pensionable age and old enough to know better.
    Starving cattle is animal cruelty.

    Very sad really

Read in the paper a couple years back about a farmer a couple miles down the road that starved his cattle. Man was unwell and needed help.

What did the neighbour say when wanted a new pair of wellies after he had saved her?

As for the SFP, I dont know if she gets it or not. Must ask Dad
