    Bit of advice needed,

Im trying to bring back up the colour on a red 99 Reg corolla at the moment. Iv'e used a forumla 1 brand compound agent which brought the colour up really well, and cover it with Mcguires branded polish. It gave a great shine to the paintwork and looked the business but alas, after using a power washer 3 days later to give the car a routine clean, all the good work was undone. I noticed a matter of hours later all the compound and polish came off and it still looks like the same faded car it was at the beginning.

I've now bought McGuires wax and redone the same areas again only this time going through all of the "3 step system' recommended by the manufacturers.

My question now is... the next time I take a power washer to the car is it going to strip through all the layers (compound, polish, wax) again??

How do I prevent the layers being stripped of the car whilst giving it a routine wash??

    Thanks a million.

Firstly, a bit of background - polish doesn’t offer any kind of protection for you paint work – it does the enhancement part of the process; brings back the gloss and depth to the paintwork, removes scratches (if you are machine polishing). It will wash away and you are supposed to wash it away (pre-protection) with certain polishes, as the residue that remains prevents the wax/sealant (your protection) from bonding, and as a result it will wash away. There are some that are filler polishes and aren’t supposed to be washed away, but the protection that would be used for it is best, from the same manufacturer of the polish that you have just used – for example: Autoglym Super Resin Polish, applied and buffed off and then Extra Gloss Protection or HD Wax applied on top to prevent the polish being washed away.

Without knowing the exact product that you have used; it sounds like it hasn’t performed very well. When polishing is done right, you are polishing away a layer or oxidation (or a very tiny amount of the lacquer), therefore, you should get a fresh new finish, and as a result, its not something that could be washed away or deteriorate after one wash. It will however, deteriorate quite quickly if not protected correctly. What I think might have happened in your situation is that the product that you have used, was quite oily. It gave the appearance of a good shiny finish, but in reality, it is similar in appearance, to just wetting the surface – it turns darker and shiny looking. And its this oily layer or film that you have washed away on your routine car wash.

It’s a pity; as you’ve no doubt, spend a bit of time and effort using a product that wasn’t cut out for the job, and you had to go and use the Meguair's 3 Step System. If you have used this correctly, the wax should ensure that the finish will last a few months. Keep topping up the wax every 2nd month and you should make it last quite some time. Also, ensure that you have a good shampoo, one that is "wax safe", otherwise it will strip the wax off over 3 or 4 washes.
