Roaster alternatives

For the last few years I've almost exclusively bought my coffee from Has Bean and always been happy with it. It's been a couple of weeks since I've ordered with them, but I've just noticed it's not only their website that has changed. Coffee prices have crept up (OK, I guess that happens), but international shipping has rocketed!

In the past three bags of coffee would have cost about £3.50, now they are charging £7!!! That works out as a £4/5 bag of coffee ultimately costing about €9!

I'm sure I'll still order from HB from time to time, but now I'm looking for other quality roasters - ideally in Ireland.

    Any recommendations?

+1 - if you order over €20 the delivery is free. I got an order the week before last off them. Order was roasted on the Weds, posted on the Thurs and arrived on Friday. Was really impressed and will definitely be ordering again.

I just signed up to a 6 mthly sub with them last week - still awaiting the arrival of month 1 so can't comment on quality yet but I know they are rated and I'm pretty sure they are CoffeeAngels roaster.

Got my Bailies order on Friday.

I'm impressed so far: Silvio espresso is dark by hasbean standards, but actually a lovely change from what I'm used to; the crema is ridiculous! (suspect some robusta content). Their Yirgacheffe is typically great too.

just to update my bailies order was waiting for me when i got home.
i've gone with the 6 mth single estate sub - this month is a coffee from tanzania - they include some notes on the coffee similar to what squaremile do if you've got a sub from them before. will bang some through the chemex in the morning :)

Thanks guys. I ordered a couple of bags from mojo, so we'll see how that works out. I'll be interested to hear more about Bailies.

Well I put 45g/750ml through the chemex this morning. Probably needed a coarser grind as I had to dump the filter paper/grinds and bit of water still in them at 4 mins. The beans are AA classed which according to sweet marias makes up approx 14% of the crop. http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.africa.tanzania.php

Of course after reading that link all I can compare this to is the Blackburn Estate which I've got a couple of times in the past years as part of my squaremile sub. Not sure that I've had tanzanians on other occasions though surely I must have got the odd one in my IMM subs. For now the only judegment I would pass is that this is no Blackburn - but a pleasant albeit unusual cup.

Badger and Dodo monthly sub is worth looking at - €18 per kg plus €4.50 postage, so €22.50 per kg. Different coffee sent out every month.

    This.
I first tried their coffee at a cafe in Rathmines and based on that, gave them a go.

When my Hasbean subscription ended, I switched to Badger and Dodo (3 months ago) and have been very happy with the 3 coffees sent so far. This month's is a fantastic Tanazania peaberry - loving it.

Wow delivery charges are mad now. 30 pounds? it used to be 16 a couple of months ago!

Seeing the price increase I decided to give Sweet Maria a go, I have order 15 pounds of coffee and the total came to 120 euro including delivery (impressive 68 dollars delivery charges!!! but still cheaper)

With Hasbean it was 125 euro for 8 pounds of coffee.

As I only buy green beans I dont mind long delivery times either, I have heard really good things about sweet maria, in fact, I think there is a coffee shop in Dublin who sells them, I believe it is located in the IFSC?

I think I have a couple of kg of green bean left so I should be ok for the time being... God imagine running out of coffee, what would I do then!

I used to buy roasted coffee from Coffeebeans.ie, quick delivery and excellent customer service but coffee wasnt as fresh as I would have wanted, never tried ordering green beans of them, might do that someday.

There is the parcelmotel option now which will make my deliveries actually cheaper (depending on where you live) ...

Using the parcelmotel in Antrim you can get 48 hr FedEx for £4 (or 24hr for £8). I then pay parcelmotel €3.50 to ship this onto Dublin for me. This works out £9 cheaper than what I was paying previously for 6kg of green to be delivered. Just checked there and can see International FedEx to Dublin on the same order is £27.27  ... I'd be pretty sure Steve isn't making anything off the fedex shipping costs though it is strange that the cost has increased at the same time as the new site went live.

Parcel motel is an option for a once-off order but for a weekly sub it'd add up.
I know the price of coffee has risen and we're getting hammered on the euro/pound exchange rate.
Might be worth mailing Steve and seeing if he could help with postage to Ireland on subs.
Would drop-shipping in bulk to 3fE and re-posting be viable for him I wonder.

The 52 wk sub has only gone up £10 for the beans which is fair enough and postage works out at £38.14 for the 52 deliveries which is also reasonabe.

Actually I emailed Steve a few minutes ago and he quickly replied as below

    Hi

We should have put up our prices two years ago, fedex raised our prices and we were charging the wrong rate. I'm afraid this is the correct rate

    Best Wishes

I am not sure if I will be using them again, tbh. And In the end is not too bad for me as I can order something like 15 kg of coffee and store it for a few months but if I was buying roasted coffee I dont know...

Hard to find an alternative (for green beans at least). The order I just placed with SweetMaria will be a good test, if the order doesnt take too long I might start using them instead. I have heard their coffee is pretty good.

Bellabarista are also a cheap option but they only have a few types of coffee so not an alternative either.

Its a shame because they were really quick and they had excellent customer service (and of course great variety of coffee)

is this a once off thing or can it be done monthly?

i went to put in my monthly order in last week and the new delivery charge is just too much. I also sent steve an email but no alternative offered and no interest in finding a solution which is a bit annoying after buying 240 bags of coffee over the last year. im waiting on an order now from mojos.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, and to see I'm not alone. I've quite enjoyed mojo's which I got last week. I might give B&D a go this week. Though I know I'm going to miss HB...

I'd be interested to know what prices 3fe are doing on bags of HB coffee, and do they stock some of the "standards". I know Cinnamon in Ranelagh sell HB coffee, but the roasting dates often seem to be just creeping up on the limit for warrant €9 for a bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

We may have to start doing Hasbean group buys :D

Seriously though you should all give ParcelMotel a go - the service is pretty fast and no doubt would be quicker than waiting on the combined snailmail of royalmail/an post ... it may be that you should just consider ordering larger quantities less frequently and the should u freeze beans threads become more frequent.

Alternatively we start a campaign to get HasBean/3FE to start a mini roastery for us over here

I am in the process of placing and order with mojo. I have to say that your man Kevin has been very helpful so far in answering all my ("many") questions. I have emailed to other roasters in Ireland and, so far, he has been the only one to reply.

Prices are good too and I so far, nobody else in Ireland seems to sell green coffee beans so I am delighted I have found them.

Obviously the variety is not as wide as with HB (I think they have 8-10 types of green beans atm which is pretty good) but I still think is worth it. The other plus is that they are in Wicklow so that's in driving distance from where I live. If the other exceeds 30-40 euro postage is free, otherwise is like 1.5 euro per 227 bag, 6.50 per kiloish I think

The order hasnt arrived yet but I will be surprised if I have any issues with it, we will have to wait and see

I'm interested in your feedback and any specific bean recommendations on the above. I'll have to give them a shout, I tried Badger and Dodo a while ago and wasn't particularly impressed (beans were slightly over for my preference) but I'll give them another whirl too.

yes no problem, i got 1kg bags so will be a few days before i try the others.
interesting what you say about badger and dodo. 1 or 2 cups of Mojos Kenya Gethumbwini Estate are nice big bold cups but after a few cups, it starts to get a bit sickly from the combination of sweet and bitter due to the beans being over roasted for my preference :)
a lighter roast would suit much better imho.

I will be getting mine tomorrow. However I order green beans so I can't comment on their roast style.

However, I have been talking to Kevin quite a lot these days (poor fella still replies to my questions without a single complaint) and from what I can tell he uses different roast profiles depending on the bean (obviously), I believe he roast most beans to right before 2nd crack, going into 2nd crack only for specific beans such as Sumatran. So I would assume you should expect mild/medium-high acidity and mild/medium high sweetness in the cup. I am not being a Mojo groupie but that's the way I roast most of my coffee (sometimes at night I might prefer a City+ roast instead) as in my opinion it makes the cup well balanced, however not everyone likes it like coffee this way.

So basically he seems to go to a City (Full City) roast, and City+ (Full City+) only for specific beans. He also increments the RD for beans such as Panama beans to increase sweetness I presume. I also think he roasts non espresso beans lighter .

I recently got a new roaster (your old behmor couldnt take it anymore lol) and I am still getting use to it but the results have been excellent so far, it is so much easier for me to control the roasting process now than it was with the behmor.

One of the reasons I got a roaster (your roaster) in the first place was because I didnt like has bean roasts, I found them way too light for my taste (I dont think they let their beans go beyond 200C although he does says on the sticker that he brings his beans to 2nd crack... so I am not sure why they look so light and have such acidity and nutty smell) in my opinion, this makes the coffee taste a bit too cinnamony and citrusy, it might be good if you are using a aeropress (some people find the after taste pleasant) but for espresso it is just not to my likings.

So if you like hasbean roasts then Mojo might be too dark for you (I could be wrong as I have never drank their coffee yet!!!), solution will be to let Kevin know and ask him to give you a lighter roast, pretty sure he wont have a problem doing it, in fact, he will appreciate your input.

A good idea could be to supply the same bean in two different roasting degrees, lets say medium and dark (ie First crack half way/ending and beginning 2nd crack) and then buy them both, in that way if one day you decide you want a sweeter coffee you can use a darker roast and if you want a more aroma and higher acidity use the lighter profile and even blend them together!

Just wanted to give a quick update regarding my coffeemojo order. I got the beans on Friday just as promised. I roasted the Panama beans giving them as suggested a longer roasting developing time (a bit over 4 minutes) and drop them just before 2nd crack.

The result was a very pleasant coffee with fruity aroma, thin body and strong and unexpected chocolaty after tase! I had a lovely capuccino this morning.

I still have a few types of coffees to try, bought Brasilian, Sumatran, Ethiopian and another two that I dont remember right now but needless to say I am very pleased with their service as well as their advice.

Cant wait for next week and give the yigarcheffe a go

well a few days later and my first impressions on this coffee were premature.
i was drinking it about 24hrs after roasting, in retrospect the flavors were out of whack. after a couple of days a really great balance came and remained consistent. I cant fault the roast and the coffee is as good, if not better, than the best ive had from hasbean for the price. great coffee!

I am too feeling the pinch ordering beans from Has Beans - last order for a regularly priced 250g bag of beans cost €10.90 to have shipped! This same bag would have cost €6.60 two year ago and 7.80 last year....thats some increase and its mainly the shipping so after reading this thread I am giving Mojo's a try especially you cant go wrong with free delivery for orders over €20. As I dont drink that much coffee (2-4 cups a day) Im going to try freeze some beans to keep its freshness...Im hoping that will work!!!!

    So heres my choices:
    • El Majahual
    • Yirgacheffe
    • Senhora de Fatima
    • Gethumbwini Estate

Just wonder how it will compare to Has Beans now!

Off the back of this thread I've set up an account with Coffee Mojo and orderd the above. Free posting over €20 was my main reason.
Paid €11 for a bag of beans in 3FE the other day, which dont get me wrong are absolutely lovely great acidity then sweetness, etc but it was expensive, considering as well I'm only getting used to how to grind etc. I feel like I'm wasting x amount of it, need to work on my consistancy so I think using some cheaper beans for a while makes sense. :D

Hope they're nice, will let ye know. Now to finish the 3FE beans first.
Since I bought the Gaggia MDF grinder I have drank a serious amount of coffee!!!

I visited both 3FE shops on Saturday and then ended up having two more double espressos at home as well, so an espresso set and a double espresso in 3FE and then two doubles at home. I think I might have a problem. :pac:

I can't wait to get home and roast my yigarcheffe. Should be ready to drink on thursday!

I know what you mean, when you have a decent coffee machine and start grinding your coffee you realize that paying 3.50 euro for a cup of coffee is no longer worth it as you can get a better cup of coffee at home for much less...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 525 ✭✭✭llatsni

The hasbean yearly sub works out around 7 eurons a bag delivered, which is still good value IMHO... if a bit hard to justify up front!

To be honest, theres only a handful of coffeeshops in Dublin I'll go to now. 3FE being top of the list even if its out of my way. Like on Saturday I came in from Blanch just for a coffee visiting both 3FE's as it turned out as the missus decided she wanted to go in to town after we were in the grand canal 3FE.

Its a bit of a nightmare when you do get a taste for proper coffee though. I just cant go to a "normal" coffee shop these days. If the missus wants to go for a coffee thats not the likes of 3FE or similar I generally wont drink the coffee, normally opting for tea or milkshake or whatever else and then having coffee when I get home. Thats not to say that my coffee making skills are amazing (they're not) however they are better than a lot of "baristas" in the city.

Its worse when you go home or to a small town. Im from Dundalk originally and well quite simply there is nowhere to get good coffee.
23 seats is the only one that comes close to making half decent coffee.
Proper gap in the market there I reckon.

I think the Irish public are only realising what potential there is for flavour in coffee now. You look at the drink market a few years back it was all budweiser and heiniken where as now most places will have some sort of German beer on tap or at least a few bottles behind the counter.

sorry for going off topic

Enjoy the yigarcheffe bohrio. Mine should be here in a few days.

I'm going to order some beans from Coffee Mojo when my Hasbean supply runs out but I noticed on the Mojo webpage that he recommends the following for the espresso blends:

    Dose: 18-20g
    Brew Time: 25-30 seconds
    Brew Weight: 36-40g

this is brew ratio of 50%, whereas from my reading online so far (I'm only beginning with espresso) most people seem to recommend a ratio of around 65% (e.g. 20g dose for a 31g brew weight).

Edit: I just saw on the website free shipping is now only available on orders over €40, this makes it a good bit less attractive

Just checked their website and still says free shipping on orders over €20.

Edit - Just seen what you mean. On a basket worth €22.50 its giving a postage cost of €4.50. I've just emailed them for clarification. Will post their reply.

Had sort of expected that this free postage over €20 couldn't last long as the postage represented 25% of the cost - mind you I should have been smarter and got a second order - pity.

Still €1.50 for postage for a single bag ain't bad considering these guys roast to order and the standard is pretty high.

jous received a reply from Kevin of mojocoffee and yes, unfortunately they have had to up their shipping prices. That said however, at 1.50 a bag it's still far cheaper then ordering from the likes of hasbean or for that matter even buying hasbean directly from 3FE. May Steve needs to look again at his pricing!

Sorry about the image quality that is my iPod touch.

Looking forward to trying these first thing tomorrow morning. A steal at 20quid. Pity the postage went up.

Might put up a photo of the espresso poured tomorrow if I could be bothered. :-)

Roasted on October 24th. I have never been in possession or probably ever tasted coffee that fresh.

    Can't wait!!

I live in Maynooth and there is a cafe there that uses Coffee Mojo beans. It is called Boss Hogg Coffee Bar. The coffee there is absolutely fantastic - the best I have had.

They also rotate their coffees every couple of days, so there is always the chance to try something new! So if you are wondering about Coffee Mojo beans, this will put all questions to rest:)

Just finished roasting El Salvador Majahual and I absolute love it. City + roast, great flavour, great body, a bit spicy but not too much, strong chocolate flavour, great after taste, very happy with it, probably in my top 5 favorite coffees of all time.

Yigarcheffe well, I ruined the roast due to a technicality, so I can't comment on it, I will get new beans asap (only ordered 224 grams).

So in conclusion, so far very happy with Mojo's coffee quality, not missing hasbean at all, IMO coffee is as good (if not better) and the fact that I dont have to wait so long to get it makes a big difference (aside from being cheaper). Also, knowing that the shop is close to Dublin so I can always drive there and pick up the coffee myself in case of an emergency.

I had a cup of Coffee Mojo's Black Magic blend from my gaggia classic this morning. Very tasty and pretty much as described on their web page, sweet and nutty

I've been getting my Coffee from Coffee Mojo for a while now, have to say I've been very impressed with all the coffees so far. Of course there are some you like more than others, I seem to have a soft spot for the Central American coffees (El Salvador, Guatemala & Panama), maybe something to do with my travels there in 1998!

It's always nice to support a small Irish business but that alone won't keep my custom, the reason I keep going back is the quality of freshly roasted coffee at a reasonable price, when you compare it to the alternatives it really is a no brainer.

The 52 wk sub has only gone up £10 for the beans which is fair enough and postage works out at £38.14 for the 52 deliveries which is also reasonabe.

the 52 week sub has gone up from 256GBP all in to 290 GBP.

For the 12 month espresso subscription it works out at 9eur per 250g - 110 euro. This is too much for me

I'm looking forward to trying some different roasters now tbh - although I would have purchased from them again by default if the prices were still reasonable.

Anyone put an order in lately at Hasbean, has the shipping changed again?

I ordered 2 bags last month and shipping with Royal Mail Airmail was about £4.60.
Now putting one bag in the basket costs over £7 and the only Royal Mail option is Airsure :(

I find the cost now just to much and find Parcel Motel a little cheaper when ordering more than a few bags at a time.

Subscriptions are decent enough value I think...

    HasBean 12 month

    £91 or £7.58 per 250g bag

Same price for the 12 week subscription.

52 Week sub is £290 or £5.57 per bag. Personally I wouldn't get through that much coffee though.

    Squaremile have an espresso subscription:

    6 months: £95 or £15.83 per 500g Bag
    12 months: £180 or £15 per 500g bag

With 3FE opening up a roastery here do you think we might get cheaper HasBean coffee in the future?

I've noticed with ordering with Hasbean is that its taking over a week to get the coffee (via royal mail) since it was roasted and while it was good for the 2nd week I started to notice into the 3rd week while the coffee is good its just not as fresh

With roasters in Ireland you're getting coffee that was roasted only 1 to 2 days ago, maybe its just all in my head though! :)
