I can't say I'm not bitter about it. I was sitting beside a 'mature' student the other day who is on the BTEA and he was furnishing his brand new iTablet more than likely paid for by the state. I'm very much annoyed that he is able to afford such luxuries since college is a financial burden on a lot of students who have to work and pay for it!
I can't see how it's fair that students have to go out and bust their asses to pay for college while some 'mature' students (the majority) are rewarded for their failure to secure employment prior to entering university with a monthly sum of 800 euro paid directly into their bank accounts for 3/4 years.
Whats even worse is that these people sign straight back onto the dole during the summer with out the slightest incentive to go out and find a job like everyone else.
It pisses me off that these freeloaders get paid to be in college while everyone else is paying to be here! How the hell is that a fair system eh?
200 euro a week on top of rent allowance is an absolute joke. Thats almost a full-time minimum wage salary in one week. No student I know would get that from their parents or would even make that while working part-time, even if they did, they would have to work pretty god damn hard.
It seems to me that it would be better off if prospective students signed on straight after school so they can avail of free fees and a yearly sum of 9000 euro. Think about it, 27,000 euro invested in a BTEA student over three years and they don't even have to pay it back!
Sounds like a great investment to me! To hell with working, whats the point?

A 'Mature Student' is somebody who left school more than 2 years ago.

The BTEA is your unemployment benefit, its just paid into your bank for the duration of the course and they get a 500eoro lump-sum to buy materials that you may need.

''Rewarded for their failure to secure employment''. Thats very harsh. They could be looking for a new career where they can actually find employment, or they could make you happy and take up a well deserved minimum wage ****ty job and live the life of a peasant.

I'm sure there are grants that you can avail of to help you on your way. there actually should be because you seem like a better investment opportunity.

They certainly don't live like peasants if they can afford fcuken iTablets?

Most of that crowd I know who are on the BTEA only went back to college because the dole office threatened to cut their entitlements because they were on it so long.
Theres a woman in my class who is on it and she looks like the character Brendan Fricker played in Home Alone 2, Lost in New York.

Who do you mean when you say 'they'? Mature students is it. Are you saying that people like yourself are better than mature students. It sounds like your jealous of his itablet.

He got 500euro to spend on what can help him through his course and he availed of a service that he is entitled to just like student grants that I'm sure you got

You bet your ass I'm jealous. I'd like nothing more than to deprive him of his iTablet considering I am a fully fledged tax payer. The last time he paid tax was probably four years ago.

I had the opportunity of getting it but I decided to go and find a job instead. I'm studying Classical Arts.

Well you chose the right option to work instead.

You shouldn't discriminate against people. All mature students are not the same. Also you do have an opinion.

I was a mature student and i know a lot of mature students. I know mature students who have aced there courses and also mature students who do courses because there benefits will be stopped and then they do courses that they have no interest in. There should be some sort of screening in place to prove your interest in the course you want to do.

While i was doing my course, a PLC student attended 1 class a day so he could get a 2500euro student grand. A load of my bum.

Can you give me more detail on the bloke in question.
What age is he, is he interested in the course, did he ever work?

Hes in his forties. I was giving him advise last summer on where to find work prior to end of smester exams. He told me he was entitled to work aswel as the BTEA and all I could think was ''Sure isn't it well for ya you c.unt..?''

Would you agree if they had to pay back the BTEA after they graduate you would have far less people applying for it? I would think so.

Ah your a gas man. he only be entitled to 20 hours a week but i do not know if its monitored by the Social Welfare.

Its not nice having to work for something while people who seem undeserving of something get it for free.

Of course, but its their Social Welfare payment, it was introduced to encourage people to actually do something without losing their benefits.

How much is the yearly cost of the course because the BTEA definitely don't pay course fees.

I know lots of them. Pretty sickening alight that we reward people for ****ing up their 20s. I did my degree in 4 years and that was it. Some people purposely waited on the dole (partying like a student) until they were 23 to get it all paid for. Years after graduating and they are still at nothing, pissing about with more pissy postgrad stuff and bouts travelling abroad.

Amazing arrogance from the OP here. OP did your parents not receive childrens allowance for you every month for 18 years? Where do you think that money came from?

Are you on a grant? If so How much?

Im guessing youve never worked or paid taxes, or done anything outside of putting your hand out to your parents.

You dont know HOW the tablet was paid for so dont be so presumptious.

People on BTEA have worked most of their lives, many including myself LOST my job. As for being a failure in the job market, im going to presume you havent ever joined said market, come back in 5 years when you do and tell us all how easy it is.

Your arrogance is outstanding. Many including myself would much prefer to be working, we cant get work. So instead of sitting on our arses we are trying to put the time to good use to improve ourselves. People dont do BTEA to avoid having their dole cut, your confusing that with FAS courses.

Shame you feel how you feel, but unlike you Ive paid taxes for many many years so forgive me if when Im down on my luck I exercise my right to draw on the countries social welfare system. Of which I am exceptionally greatful has given me the opportunity to improve myself and provide me with a chance to get a degree. BUT 188 when you have people depending on you, bills, mortgages, kids etc. doesnt last long, at all. So get off your arrogant high horse.

They get paid all their usual welfare entitlements that somebody who is available to work gets except they are not available to work. So that is 188, plus their rent allowance every week. No fees or registration fess to be paid. Everybody has a degree at this stage so you have close to zero chance getting a graduate job if you pissed about in your 20s and are only going to college on a BTEA.

I went to college I had my fees paid for by the state. My father paid my registration fee as I was not entitled to a grant due to our pretty average single salary in the family (3 of us in college at the same time also). I worked on and off and ni the summer to live on 25 per week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Larsso30

also, how much of a grant did you get last year? I didnt get a grant as people on BTEA dont get a grant.

At least I worked for years and paid taxes, what have you done to deserve a grant?

your ignorance is unreal, im in my 30s. Not 20s. I dont piss about, I dont drink and I dont go out. I lost my job through no fault of my own.

I paid for my registration and my fees.

I didnt **** about in my 20s but worked damn ****ing hard. Ive lived on far less than 25 a week after bills, rent, food have been paid for.

and not everyone gets rent allowance either.

at least get facts straight before bitching and making **** up

You get BTEA if your entitled to it, BTEA doesn't pay rent allowance.

You seem to be very mistaken on who gets BTEA and why you would think people on BTEA ''pissed away there 20's'' is beyond me and a very inaccurate statement.

I'm not talking about people like you. I'm talking about the ten or so stoners I know who were on it. Even for legitmate cases I don't think it will give any net economic benefit.

If you are on rent allowance then you will still get rent allowance as a BTEA student.

What about the hundreds of stoners who get a grant ? Is that acceptable? They dont bother their arse to go to class most of the time, do course work most of the time? But them getting a grant every year is cool with you yeah?

No it pisses me off to see people get grants. I knew one girl who got the grant and also a credit card which she spent about 2K per month on from her very well off parents. My own partner got a grant but again her parents were rewarded for not bothering to work. I would prefer to see zero interest loans for all undergraduate students.

The result is that most people in college these days or at least the last decade don't care that much about their course. They have no financial investment in it. They do it because it is something to do and people can't look down on them. I think this country would be much better served having people go to work and not spend a a decade in education.
