Sky HD Box Question

I've had the old Sky+ box for the last 6 years (no real need or desire to upgrade to HD). I was passing one of those cash converter shops yesterday and saw that they had a HD box going 2nd hand for €40.

If I bought it, could I just swap it for my current box? I won't be getting HD channels - I just want it for the HD UI and (I assume) a bigger hard drive.

What are the pitfalls (if any)?

Ring Sky - if you have an old thompson Box - they'll upgrade you a free one if you agree to stay wioth them for anopthher year. Well they did for me - but that was an old thompson HD box. mmm

    Bit of a disjointed post

There's no problem with getting your own box. Im assuming you have a Sky sub so you just have to ring Sky to have the card paired with the new box.

The HD box will get you RTE2 and BBC1 in HD providing of course you have a HD telly.

As mentioned above you could try Sky for a new box but it may necessitate having to threaten to cancel to get them to agree. Watch out on Adverts as you could pick a new Sky+ HD box for around €50 - €60 at times.

I would definitely recommend anyone in your situation buying the box yourself and pairing the card. It would save you possibly paying Sky more or signing up to a new contract. The main downsides are:

    1) Need to ring Sky to pair card

    2) You won't be able to keep the recordings from your old box. They won't play

As said you get RTE2 HD and BBC HD without paying for HD pack. Try to get a 1TB box are it holds more recordings. You could use you old box for the free channels or sell it. Make sure to move the card over first!

Be wary of buying second-hand Sky+ HD boxes.

I bought one recently but Sky would not pair my current Sky+ card to it as they said that the HD box was "linked to another account".

The 2 options are 1) return the HD box and get a refund, or 2) ask the previous owner to contact Sky and unlink the HD box from their account.

I went for option 2, but the previous owner of the HD box was told there was money owing on their old account so Sky wouldn't unlink the box.

I was lucky to have met a decent seller, a private individual, who gave me a refund for the HD box.

It would appear to be Sky's way of making sure that they recoup the cost of the HD boxes by ensuring people finish out their subscription...

    Cheers,
    Eddie

PS there is absolutely no way of telling the status of a HD box by examining it, it's only when you contact Sky with the serial number of the HD box that they say they can't help you. It is *possible* that it could be their stock response to cut down on the trade of HD boxes.
