My heart was broken trying to pull ragworth a while back {not to mention my back} an old neighbour of mine told me "only pull ragworth when the moon is filling up"so I put his theory to the test last week before the full moon and it was like picking flowers ,roots and all came up with very little effort. Now I figure wet ground had alot to do with making it easier and I'm not about to start worshipping false gods or howling at the moon but has anyone old farming practices based around the moon phases ..............and please no science lectures {I know we are in the company of ..experts} but can we keep this light hearted

never castrate bulls when the moon is filling. always when it's on it's down, .. a lot less swelling

An fellah around here does alot of castrating for people , he will squeeze any size or age just so long as the moon is right . I dont know what phase the moon needs to be in but anyone that uses him has the height of praise for him

I sow my seeds at new moon. I've done it for years. When Ive sown seeds at full moon, they seem delayed and not as many come up. The last few years have been all over the place though, whebn Ive had to postpone due to the weather. If only we could go back to the weather we had a couple of years ago.

Never heard that. However I heard Ken Ring, the NZ guy who forecasts the weather, explain that the moon has a tidal effect not alone on the sea but also on the land!! He explained that the land lifts up as the moon gets stronger, and settles down as the moon wanes.
Perhaps that makes it easier to pull roots out of the ground!!

    Jesuus lads I don't know..
I usually try and give this old thinking a hearing as there is often some unknown scientific reason behind them...

The whole phases of the moon thing is a hard sell on me...

Yer man says the ground lifts up ?? What does that mean??
What's the thinking about it being easier to pull ragworth?? placebo effect maybe ??

i took it to start goin down from now till a new moon so is that good news?.

Ken Ring is on boards I questioned him a few years back as to why he got the weather so wrong, I didn't get a straight answer from him though.

My cousin who's no spring chicken has said about planting seeds at a certain moon phase... But since it sounded daft I didn't really listen....I know there's a bio-dynamic calendar that has "ideal" planting, sowing, harvesting windows... Don't know where you'd get it, or if you go mad trying to follow it

Hi CJ ,this is all new to me but I think the thinking behind it is that the moon is at its strongest for these few days of the month and will be a lot "weaker" by the end of the week it will be intresting to see is there any difference in the bulls or is this all old wife's tales.!!

There's quite a few lunar experts, including me. However you're in no danger of a science lecture on this subject mikeoh, from any of us lunatics.

This hasn't got anything to do with science, which is about stuff that can be proven to happen.

The moon influences tides and periods. The moon on its back and all that stuff is silly. If its on it's back here, it is also on its back in Spain and France and Poland and Iceland and..... Point being different weather in different places but the same moon. I know about climate differences playing their bit but you know what I mean

didnt ask the vet in the end ! was thinking about but was afraid he might think i was mad . :o
ah well , few vets on here can give an opinion .
i do know that the gravity of the moon pulls the surface of the earth towards it. on water this causes tides and on land it causes a slight bulge so i wouldnt rule out that it may have scientific reasoning behind it if the moon does affect bulls balls and grass seed. old wives tales are observations , science is the reasons why these observations happen:)
