What lurcher to get

Good afternoon, you may remember my lurcher was ill last month he recovered from that but yesterday the brother went over him with a silage trailer so now I'm looking for a new one.

I got 200 from the brother for the dog which wasn't enough at all but the old mans word is final . I wouldn't be going lamping much with it maybe once or twice a week and ferreting most Saturdays. I'd also like if it would be a good guard dog that would stay around the house and yard like my terriers do.

    Thanks
    JD G

I don't know about guard dog but you wont go wrong with a good first cross collie X hound for the lamp.

    What Lurchers to get?
    Answer = a fast one

    Have to agree with Wayne
My mate has a collie x hound and it's a rocket and it retrieves

There's a lot more to lurcher work than running fast dodderangler.
Years ago a fella near me used to have a three legged labX catch rabbits regularly on the lamp - surprisingly fast considering but cute out.

Get whatever X lads around you are successfully using - when these threads come up on forums people start recommending things like wheaton and bedlington crosses. How many of those breeds are being worked in Ireland today? It's a pointless exercise otherwise.

BullX are very popular - most are lambs but they're not ideal for what you want - loose with the terriers?

    3/4 whippet/collie - a bit fine maybe? - I like the deerhoundX as well.
Again no point using a pet collie - plenty of working ones about.

The lads around all have bull and deerhound crosses but they've no interest at all in rabbits, only foxes and other bigger quarries. A friend of mine had wheaten hounds but he sold them all a couple of years ago but again they weren't for rabbits. I've never seen a bedlington terrier x but they're meant to be handy enough, I've never even seen one on Donedeal.

A bull cross would do as a guard dog but they're usually too slow off the mark for ferreting.

A collie whippet would be my ideal choice but I don't know anyone with one nor is there any on donedeal.

I have a fine collie dog here that I'd like to put over a whippet but I don't want to be stuck with a load of pups, he's 24 inches to the shoulder, 27 kg of muscle and can run at about 33 mph. He caught a fox yesterday evening and killed him in less than 10 seconds.

They're too light and coat is bad.

if your collie is that good why don't you see if someone with a whippet or whippet cross bitch will let you pair them off for a choice of a pup. . .

springer x hound cross would love to see how they would be on rabbits especially with ferrets but imo a whippet hound first cross or 3\4 whippet 1\4 hound would be best

I ended up getting a second cross bull whippet bitch for a hundred euro. She's a fine strong bitch, trained to lamp and ferret and she retrieves. Thanks for the help lads.

Cool, If the wee little piggies ever get a decent toe hold over here (doubt it will ever happen to a sustainable level) it would be great craic getting back into them with the dogs and a good long blade, i might add that this is all totally above board and legal in Australia, in fact there is Taxes and Export duties paid.

I have not linked a video with the Coup De Grace, but you can get the picture, after you have grabbed the boars hind legs and flip it over you insert a long blade into the heart, when they get one over the 100kg you have a real arm wrestle on your hands that could turn pear shaped very quickly, although the dogs needed (normally 2 or 3) would not be considered socially acceptable in a housing estate.

Stop, it'd be unbelievable. What kind of dogs do they use on them? I'd say the dogs would get killed fairly regularly though. Sticking them wouldn't be very safe either.

Do you have many dogs yourself?

Just a Springer who thinks he is person, live in North Cork so not any of that stuff here, only when i head back for a holiday once a year, then its all Bow Hunting and Pig Chasing (the stuff i cant do here), any decent size dog will do for the pigs, we used to go to the pound looking for any decent size lad and buy him for obligatory $50 and take him along, after a few trips (5 to 10+) he got into the swing of things and find himself advertised in The Trading Post going for $500+ with a custom collar and Breast Plate made out of thick leather, it was a win win situation we made money and he missed a date with a lethal injection if still there after 7 days :pac:.

We made up decent leather collars and breast plates so our casualty list was very very low compared to others who refused to suit up their dogs, although you learn how to do some good stitches on shoulders, as for sticking them being brave or just stupid helps. what size dogs are you using on the bigger quarry???

Seeing as she didn't believe me finding the last pup floating down a stream in a wicker basket I don't think she'd believe that :p
