I'm sure someone who knows their stuff will be on soon and tell you whats what.
In the meantime, here is a little build of some of the most recommended parts on here.

Do you need a monitor or an OS?

Don't need monitor, do need OS =]

Better off buying it all at hardwareversand. Less hassle and they'll build it for ya

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Vaxxine

Well I don't need it assembled as I have someone who will do that for me.
They do seem cheaper though compared to other sites I've been looking at.

Another thing, Does it matter what chipset the motherboard uses?

Z77 is the best chipset to go for. Other options are Z68 and P67 which also allow for overclocking but are older. B75 is a cheaper one, no overclocking. H77 and H61 are cheaper ones, older and no overclocking.

@Tea_Bag The OP mentions under 800 so that's the limit.

    @Vaxxine Would you consider overclocking?

How about this setup? The items are picked from hardwareversand and their main method of payment is bank transfer (standard in Germany)... I'm not sure if they introduced credit cards yet, as they mentioned that they would.

    Item|Price
    Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (SB-Version)|€81.96
    WD Caviar Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€72.01
    LogiLink USB 2.0 all-in-one Card Reader, für 3,5" Einbauchschacht|€3.97
    LiteOn iHAS122-18 schwarz SATA|€17.69
    Intel Core i5-3570K Box, LGA1155|€210.11
    ASRock Z77 Pro4-M, Sockel 1155, mATX|€83.92
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 Windforce 2X, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort|€203.09
    BitFenix Merc Beta|€32.20
    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-12800U CL9|€35.69
    Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 450W|€42.16
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€801.79

Oh yeah, the windows is in German, so you need an English disc. You are buying the key or license here. You can download an English disc easily, just see the guide in my signature.

@Monotype: That set up doesn't look too bad! I did a bit more looking around and found these. I'm lame and don't know how to do the table :p

    ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 €121.79
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB €55.61
    Asus 1GB Geforce GTX 550Ti £89.49
    Intel Core i5 3450 1155 Ivy Bridge 3.1 Ghz €167.88
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 €38.89
    Corsair Builder Series CX500 V2 €51.81
    OCZ Agility 3 SSD 60 GB €54.59
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo processor cooler €27.99
CiT Vantage white gaming case ATX £35.98
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - 64-bit English version €88.90
    Total- €764.47 (roughly)

Two of the items are from Scan, the rest are Hardwareversand, hence two of the prices in pounds.

Would that be decent enough to play the games I mentioned above? I'm not looking for anything extravagant or very high end.

If you're buying from several different places, you'll end up spending quite a bit on postage.

The Z68 is an older chipset - not much difference between the Z77 to be fair - a few bits like extra USB 3 and often better PCI-E 3 support, but Z77 is still the newer standard and often slightly better value.
If you wanted a board that's a bit better than the one I suggested, you could go for
    http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/57133/MSI+Z77A-G45%2C+Intel+Z77%2C+ATX%2C+DDR3.article
    or
    http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/58055/ASRock+Z77+Extreme4-M%2C+Sockel+1155%2C+mATX.article
or if you wanted a bit more again, you could get the extreme4:
    http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/57624/ASRock+Z77+Extreme4%2C+Sockel+1155%2C+ATX.article

I went with the WD blue drive on account of the 2 year warranty (vs 1 year). They also have a 500GB drive on hardwareversand. The Seagate is much the same for speed though, assuming that it's the latest generation.

Graphics card is much slower. You're talking about half the speed or worse in a lot of cases.
    http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/660?vs=541

CPU is not overclockable - It's still a good powerful CPU but the overclockable CPU give you more options. Overclocking a CPU like this is extremely easy and the extra speed will give you a very long lasting system.

Just don't get the tall vengeance RAM. Or Corsair's 1.65V RAM. Get 1.5V low profile.

That PSU is only equivalent to the 450W amazon that I posted - and the amazon is €9 cheaper.

That's an okay SSD, but I'd go for a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830/840 instead as they'll perform better with incompressible data.

If you were to go with AMD graphics card instead of nVidia, you could get a 7850 1GB for about €180 which would be a more midway card between the 550ti and the 660?

Edit:There ya go, if you like the case you can get it free delivery from amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/CiT-Vantage-Limited-Edition-Interior/dp/B007934S90/

Otherwise, I'd look into shifting the whole build to scan. Shipping from scan is about €15 or if they decide your case is heavy, it could be £20+.

So the Motherboard in your table is an mATX, does that not have any bearing on the type of case? Does that size fit any? I'm reconsidering going with that one afterall.

The Seagate HDD is 2 yr warranty :P And I don't care too much for overclocking right now :) The RAM is 1.5v too :)

Would a PSU of 450w be enough for the 660 graphics card and CPU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

I just picked that board because it's pretty good value for a Z77 motherboard. mATX is slightly smaller but should be compatible with all ATX cases. You would only be losing PCI slots. There's the other boards I suggested anyway.
The only thing that you would need to be concerned about would be if you got the smaller mATX case and a larger ATX motherboard!

Seagate is incorrectly labelled, I think. Seagate's website have it as 1 year. Not that they're very open about it.

    Overclocked GTX 660 is <130W
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GTX_660_OC/25.html

An overclocked CPU and rest of a standard system should be <200W.

In other words, you'd have plenty of room.

Overclocking is well worth looking into as you can get a 20% without much difficulty. It can only be done with a 'K' CPU so I suppose if you want to keep it inside your budget, you may opt for the cheaper CPU. For gaming, graphics card is far more important than the CPU.
