Where to get a punching bag and how to train with it?

    Hey Folks,

I am looking to buy a punching bag for my room but have no idea about the right specifications or which to buy. I am just over 6 feet and 13st cut. I have recently begun lessons in Krav Maga and have some basic standup training in BJJ. I need to know what size bag to get(I would prefer one that hangs from the roof) as I will be using it primarily for striking practice, I was also wondering if anybody could reccomend some youtube videos of Muay Thai striking routines that can be practiced at home on a punch bag.

Any help pointing me in the right direction of a good value bag or that knows some MT drills(especially about footwork, as it is something I know little about but wish to improve) for the bag would be much appreciated!

If you want to learn muay thai go to a muay thai club u will learn alot faster and your technique will be alot better than if u teach yourself. If you just want a bag what sort of money do u want to spend.

I'd echo the above that going and training in a full time Thai gym will help you progress much faster than trying to teach yourself.

Absolutely no harm in hitting the bag at home. There are no 'routines' in Thai, getting good at striking is learning the very basic round kick/heavy one two and then throwing thousands and thousands of them.

Getting good at footwork, timing etc can best be learned with loads of sparring with people who are better than you... for which, again, you need a club.

There is a bag up on adverts for 20 quid at the moment, can't really go wrong there.

    Best of luck with it!

    Seriously?.

As regards the bag, they're a good workout but they can not come close to replicating training with a partner so as with the other advice re. joining a club ~ join a Muay Thai club.

A bag can't teach you anything.

Hey guys thanks for the replies.

Good man Makikomi for spotting my mistake, I meant to type MMA instead of BJJ. I am aware that there is not much that can be gained from videos but at present only have the time for once class per week so will begin searching for a Muay Thai club when KM finishes in December. In the meantime I plan to use the bags for anything I learn in KM and for general conditioning purposes.

Does anyone know if there is an ideal height/weight size for bags? Are the sand-filled ones the best? Are ones hung from the roof or free-standing better in people's experience?

    Thanks in advance.

I got a bag on Amazon. Even in the current climate, I managed to get one delivered from the UK for cheaper than I could buy the same model here.

When i went from KM to kickboxing, my bag work was all over the place and I pretty much had to start again. It might be an idea to get the bag when you find an MT club, as you'll just get yourself into bad habits if you're using KM punches on the bag, in my opinion.

You're probably as well just getting yourself a 6 euro skipping rope and then doing some core work so you're ready for MT.
