Why is facebook making my private messages public?!

Loads of people have been telling me about this, but it only came up on my profile/timelie now, how the **** do I stop it?

Facebook uses an algorithn called Edgerank to help display the most interesting information about you. Your private messages are clearly more ingteresting than your status updates. Having a much more interesting life and hence statuses will correct thr issue

they're not private messages, you just think they are, go check your private messages and they won't show up there cause they were wall posts!

You get a collection of messages on the top right of each year, that friends have posted on your wall but no private messages.

Please read the article in the second post - i'm 100% sure this isn't a privacy bug -
For a start, you could check your email notifications of those messages ( i did this ) , they were all wall posts, not private messages

Some of the reports of 'old private messages are on my timeline' were from before facebook even launched private messages as a feature. I think people are just forgetting how they used Facebook 5 years ago - my own timeline has a bunch of conversations on it (though, one sided because i see only my side) from when people used to post on each other's walls as if it was a direct message.

Thankfully my friends were aware that anyone looking at my profile was able to see them (and always had been) and weren't posting anything under the assumption that it was only visible to me - this is how all three of the big social networking sites worked back then - bebo, myspace and Facebook all had people writing semipublic comments on their friends' profiles as if it was private until people started atually using private messages directly. (actually, did bebo even have PMs?)
