Hi, can anyone recomend a good rucksack to use for commuting, i know panniers would be better but i don't want to leave anything on the bike.
Something that would be able to hold a laptop and change of cloths.
    Thanks.

I've been using this for the past year: http://www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/mens/stratos_24_1

I've been on long long rides with it and not noticed it at all. My favourite bag ever. I'm only upgrading to a Chrome Metropolis : http://www.chromebagsstore.com/bags/messenger-bags/metropolis-pastelblue--black-ltd.html
because with school, I've now got a ton of books, and lunch, and rain-gear etc,, so i need a huge bag, but I would say the Stratos is perfect if you don't need massive capacity, now I've never carried a laptop in it myself so I@m not sure, it depends on the screen size i suppose, but there should be measurements on the site for you.

Unbelievably comfortable, special design so your back doesn't get sweaty, but fairly small capacity (only24ish ltrs). So could be worth your while getting the bigger version.
But the bag is extremely high quality, great straps, and really good pocket design (places for keys, phone, everything...). Definitely worth very single cent.

If you are in Dublin get to Blanch 50 D North shop have Deuter bags, I bought one recently and bloody love it, its got the airflow thing so it raised on your back. It will hold a large laptop and a change of clothes but maybe not a pair of shoes as well. They are online too but preferred the 'fit test', looked a right donk walking in with said laptop. Highly recommended.

Panniers. Backpacks that don't get you sweaty are a myth imo.

Yeah, hey a rack and a pannier, no matter what, a rucksack will leave your dripping, some will be less sweaty than others but none will work perfectly.

if you don't have rack mounts you can get a seatpost rack that can take up to something like 20kg.

The cost of a rack and pannier will probably be less than a fancy schmancy backpack anyway.

I think the 53 degrees north shop is better. :D

    ahem a 3 degree difference......

Yeah you will sweat to some degree. If you are wearing full cycling gear that shouldn't be a problem. If not then panniers or a good saddle bag system. Probably panniers would be better with a laptop. You should be able to get one you can take from the rack.

I use a courier bag and I think its great. Because it rides quite low on your back I find it doesn't make me sweat much. The version I have is a large one and it can easily fit my very large laptop and a change of clothes including shoes.

Hi t bear, what model of deuter do you have.

    +1 on the Deuter.

I've a Transalpine that I bought online and love it. It's comfortable but despite the excellent design there is still some minor sweating on the back - however, I've a long commute. I reckon on a shorter commute (less than an hour) would be a sweat-free experience.

The other morning I had a towel, trousers, shoes, a 17" laptop, power cable, A5 filofax and a hardcover copy of 'Stalingrad' in the bag and it was still very comfy, despite the weight.

Great outdoors off grafton st have lots of deuter bags to try if you wanted to see how they felt. I like the look of that osprey myself.
