Timon Of Athens

We recently say Timon of Athens at the South Bank in London. The first half was spellbinding, brilliant and witty, the theatre packed to the rafters (I reckoned about 1200), but the second half dragged on taking place mainly in a rubbish dump and spoiled what was otherwise a witty and imaginative production.

Its not easy to work out why modern versions of Shakespeare are rarely as good as versions set in period, and the only explanation we came up with was that its hard to re-write someone who is often hailed as the greatest writer in the English Language, and would still urge anyone to go if they get the chance. Simon Russell Beale's performance is worth travelling to see.
