Hi folks, my kid is 18 at the end of October and someone said to me today that i wont receive CB for him this month as it stops on his 18th Birthday. Now i've googled it and there's 2 websites giving conflicting info, Welfare.ie says once he is full time education (which he is) ,i should have automatically got a form for school to fill in and he will receive it till June, but Citizens advice.ie is stating that its gone at 18 thats it, doesnt matter about school etc, can anyone enlighten me better?

Once the kid hits 18, that's it - bye bye child benefit. -Brought in at last minibudget.

You'll receive it in October but not November because it's not paid the month they are born they pay it the month they turn 18.

Yeah,,We're in the same boat..One of Ours turns 18 next week,,and bang it goes.

If I remember correctly,,the Form you fill in for the school,,is to keep the rate you get for him,if your on Social Welfare.. They normally stop this as well, but if you get the Form signed, and send it back,,they pay it until he leaves school next June.

I'm open to correction on this though.

Child benefit stops forever in the month a child is 18.
if you are in receipt of another DSP benefit/allowance and are getting the 29.80/14.90 for that child and the child continues to be in full time education, then you will continue to get that 29.80/14.90 until the month in which that child is 22, as long as they continue to be in fulltime education.
But your child benefit is gone at 18. Gone, nada, no more, finito, gone forever.:)

    Thanks MrsByrne...

It's that one I was on about.. €29.80/€14.90.

    I knew the C.B. stops at 18.

At a guess you probably need to apply for the payment there will be forms for the school or college to stamp.

Yep got the CB at start of the month and i got a letter today stating that i wont be eligable to any more as he is 18 so thats it officially signed and sealed...Regarding the weekly OPFA payment, i got a form a few weeks back for the school to sign stating that he is there till June 2013, so that's ok till then, but what happens when he does his Leaving Cert? If he doesnt get a job what happens Social Welfare wise, will he be entitled to anything? He's not (god forgive me for saying this) an intellectual so he's starting to look at options like a fitness/sports course in College, but will he be entitled to a grant? Jesus my head is melted looking up sites as they contradict each other!

He could claim for JobSeekers....But he will have to wait 3 months.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_allowance.html

    "Students

If you have just left school you cannot get Jobseeker's Allowance. To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must have been out of school for three months and you must be at least 18 years of age. ".
