Also depending on where you are in the country you may only need a saorview box or a tv with a mpeg 4 tuner as they will receive both the Irish and British channels after the 24th of next month.

I picked this up from another thread, Can anyone give me moro info on this or links to sites?

    its self explainatory.

and nothing to do with satellite.

and its ALREADY the case, and if you are in Leitrim it's likely you are near enough the border.

Sorry for being stupid, I don't keep up with these things, I only started looking at this again recently as my sky box has died and I'm looking into whats out there.

Is it the case then that If I have a UK ariel for northern channels like in the old days and my current uhf ariel for Irish channels I can pick up everything with and mpeg4 receiver??

    100% correct

the range of channels wont be quite as large as you get via sat, but all the bbcs, itvs, channel 5 etc are there from the same transmitter that you would have used in the past for analogue bbc/ utv.

If you want (UK) Freeview HD, you'll need a receiver with a DVB-T2 tuner. Obviously, all Freeview HD branded kit will have this & the vast majority of these will handle Saorview too.

No current Saorview STBs are T2 capable, but a lot of the tv sets are. From Jan. 2013, all (presumably only approved after that date) Saorview equipment will also have to have a T2 tuner.

    Is that true?

I'm looking for a DVB-T2 receiver as I can get Freeview too. If the Saorview approved equipment will be T2 capable in January I'll wait until then.

I wouldn't wait, only newly approved equipment will be required to have a DVB-T2 tuner. It could be that no manufacturer will submit any products for testing and approval next year so you might have a long wait.

As Peter says above there are Saorview approved TVs now that have DVB-T2 tuners e.g. some of the Sony range. The new range of Samsung smart PVRs are FreeviewHD approved (DVB-T2) and also have the Saorview logo on the epg page.

I just checked back in as I have a related query, I have 2 TVs which were bought in the UK, both are supposed to be Freeview, I tried to tune these into the saorview channels, one didn't pick up anything at all, the other worked on audio but no picture. I tried this a few months ago, any ideas?

Normal FreeView is MPEG2 which will give you sound only on Saorview. You would need a FreeView HD set to show Saorview as it uses MPEG4

You don't necessarily need Freeview HD. Plenty of recent sets sold as Freeview in the UK will work with Saorview.

Saorview recommend Freeview HD, so I'd think twice about risking a non HD TV. It's irresponsible suggesting getting a non HD Freeview TV, to be fair.

Of course, if you're feeling lucky..

Who's irresponsible? The OP here is enquiring about sets that he already owns.

Luck doesn't come into it: if you don't want to go for Saorview approved, just check the specs. If someone in a border area (like the OP) is looking for recommendations for a new tv, I would suggest one of the Saorview approved models that also has a DVB-T2 tuner.

Adrian to answer your question, you dont have to buy a new TV. Given you are in the border area you can buy a Freeview HD box that will do both Freeview (including the HD stations) and Saorview which simply connects to your existing TV.

i-Can Easy HD 2851T Freeview HD Set Top Box with BBC iPlayer & HDMI Cable will do what you want.

    Links you were looking for.

    €43.49 on play.com

    STG £29.95 from Richersounds.

    Thanks for the replies,

I have the UK channels on Sat at the mo not bothered at trying to get UK terrestrial as my house is between 2 hills and I'm slightly out of the strong signal area for Brougher Mountainm so it could end up being a waste of time.

I was hoping to save myself getting 2 saorview boxes for these TVs, One is about 6 years old thats the one I'm getting the audio on, it must only have an MPEG2 tuner??? Althought I thought the whole point of Freeview was that it was digital and so should have an MPEG4 tuner I seem to have gotten my wires crossed on that one.

The TV which isn't picking up anything is about 2 years old I'll check the spec this weekend.
