    Hi there ,

my husband's license is due for renewal , he got a letter about a week ago as a reminder that he's license is out on the 3rd October which was grand as we never thought of it but we noticed his C license to dive a rigid lorry and EC1 for rigid + trailer is already out on the 19th September , does this mean he has to resit his rigid truck test or will they put it on his new license ? Thanks in advance :)

I don't really understand how one category can be expired before another, but in any case the answer is that he doesn't need to resit his test, he just needs to fill out all categories that he's qualified for and they'll be included on his new 10-year licence.

I don't quite understand it myself :) He had his car license already of course and then did his truck test so I suppose they just put it on from the date he got that test but still doesn't explain why the dates are different but when did they ever make anything straight forward in this country ! Thanks for your help :)

According to http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/renewing_a_full_driving_licence.html you can still simply renew a licence even if it expired up to 10 years ago!

It's also likely that he'll have to sit a medical test to renew his C and EC1 licence.

Never thought of that - is it possible that the expiry date for the C licence is ten years after the date of his last medical? That would seem to make sense if he did the medical just before applying for his last licence.

That's probably right Seamus, likely he sat last Medical on 19/9/2002. Actually couldn't figure it out myself (and I worked in Motor Tax a long time ago), so I should have known.

Well I sent his license in the other day with fee , photos and form but didn't do the medical as it said on the form that one wasn't needed if you had already completed a medical previously for the class of license you wanted , we just presumed that as he had a medical done from before that ,it was not required for renewal as he is not near old age and has no medical conditions ect .......I suppose they will contact us if we need to send in a medical ? Also does anyone have any idea how long it takes to get a new license fron the motor office ? Thanks

Sorry to say it Willow74, but they'll probably send it back to you. I think the longest you can have a valid medical for is 10 years, so I'd say he'll need one.
Best thing to do is give them a ring on Monday morning and see what's the story. You could then send a medical in without waiting for them to send the whole application back in the post. Get someone's name tough!
No idea how long it takes these days, would depend on which COunty you're in as well.

I was getting my licence renewed recently. Hadn't heard anything for two weeks so rang them up (Clare). Massive delay in processing, they were currently working on licences received two months back.

You may want to chase it up with a letter from employer saying he needs his licence. I did that, but I reckon they just did it on the strength of the phone call, as I received it two days later.

I'm in County Offaly so no idea how long it takes here but I'll give them a call Monday or Tuesday as he would need his license for work alright , thanks for all the help :)
