Last season's jokes were more miss than hit IMO...

.. here's hoping it doesn't go the same way this year.

watched it too, had some funny moments and the production values of the space station were top notch....it wasn't a cheapo attempt at zero gravity.

Loved Sheldon's Spiderman speech to Amy! :) ....it was really sweet :)

It's surely only a matter of time before Sheldon's flop of hair gets a spinoff.

Good to see Kevin Sussman added as season regular... I wonder if they'll actually do the gay storyline with Raj and Stuart or just hint at it like they did with Raj and Howard for so long... I think it would actually be an interesting development...

Yeah the end there was a bit of a "will they? wont they?" thing, kind threw me a bit as i didnt think the creators would go in that direction, although it could make for some good comedy

Looks to me that they've 4 different stories lines going on for the season
Leonard and Penny, he wants it to be more serious, she doesn't.
Sheldon & Amy, she wants it to be more serious, he doesn't.
Howard & Howard's Mother & Bernadette, Howard torn between his mother & wife while being stuck in space.
Raj & Stuart, 2 forever alone guys who find each other, expect a lot of gay references with Raj paying for everything.

Thought it was pretty 'meh' to be honest. I'm not liking Sheldon and Leonard's new hair either. The show has a totally different look/feel to it too... think they got new cameras/lighting and it bothers me. I don't like change!

yeah jim parsons hair line is receding like crazy and that dodgy comb-over just makes it look worse,

Yeah it does feel different, the result feels more "deliberate" or polished or something somehow. :P

    i thought it was alright.

TBH i REALLY hope they dont go down the gay route though with raj and stuart.

the whole point of the humour they get out of him is everyone thinks he's gay because of how he acts.

making that his sexuality kills that stone dead.

besides after how everyone eles got paired off over the last two seasons i was kinda hoping he'd get a stunner or something.

poor bastard deserves it as to quote him "i ll always be the one that got a girl after sheldon cooper ! .

    :D

True...he's better looking + funnier then Sheldon....but as you say the way he acts girls think he's gay. They really need him to get over this i can't talk to girls unless i'm drunk....boring now

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Turning Raj gay wouldn't make sense - far more likely is that he'll begin a new bromance and they'll play that up for laughs and make Howard jealous.
Oh and agreed the "need-to-be-drunk" thing is very old. Move on and develop the character.

On another note: The show has seemed to remove some of the nerdier references that were in earlier seasons in favour of broadening the comic appeal. It's a shame. What will though be unforgivable is if they fail to mention the LHC breakthrough that occurred over the summer (and during the summer break). If Sheldon never mentions the discovery of a particle matching the theoretical Higgs-Boson it'll be a very poor showing, given this is 100% relevant to the character and the equivalent, in his profession, of winning the World Cup but even more so.

Well, there's going to be a bit more Star Trek TNG crossover: not only is Wil back on set at the moment, he says LeVar Burton pops in too. By the end of the run, I expect to see Gates McFadden, Patrick Stewart and The Shat in there somewhere too.

Second episode was much better than the first.
Lot more laughs and they have thankfully quenched the notion of Raj and Stuart being more than buds.

Second Episode was atrocious!! I hate how the writers keep pulling penny and leonard apart-Like either go one way or another with the storyline! So disappointing as this used to be my favorite show!

True though IMHO the Rachel/Ross arc worked better for some reason. It had more legs than the Penny/Leonard one and felt more "real". I think there's been a bit of shark jumping with the latter. It feels more forced to me.

The will they/won't they worked for a time, then they did. OK, then they split rather clumsily and then went back to will they won't they almost as if it never happened. Then they get back together for the 100th episode in a way that to me felt very contrived and done just for that milestone. Now it looks like the writers want to reset again. IMHO that will stale peoples involvement. While the writing on the gags front is usually pretty good, for me the story arcs and development is patchy. IIRC the Leonard character had a girlfriend(a doctor?) for 2 or 3 episodes who then disappeared with no explanation. His relationship with Raj's sister ended too and we didn't see it actually ending as such.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Yeah, i'm a massive fan of the show and since the beginning the main story of penny and Leonard has always bored me. I always felt that its purpose was to get a larger audience of girls to watch and their cashing in of the relationship at the end of the first season showed that.
I've always been more interested in everyone else and felt that their progressions have been a lot more fair. So its easy for me to ignore the constant back and forth with P&L because i have been since season 2.

they've gotten all the mileage they can out of the Penny/Leonard and Raj not being able to talk to women things now, 6 seasons of this? I like Raj but they need to give him something else to do.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,217 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

It was the friends comparison that made me think. Friends went on for longer as did their will they won't they arc, but it was written better overall IMHO. Not just that part.

I was not that big of a viewer of the show, but like friends at one time it's in damn near constant rotation on multiple channels so I've no choice :D This evening I caught the very first episode and like friends it had the characters well set up from the get go, which is usually a good sign. That said what happened to the Penny wan? She went well off the boil... Anyway for me Friends had better overall writing and character development while TBBT has the better jokes on average, but is quite sloppy at times with overall story.

I'm with krudler et al on the let's change the record. The Raj character hasn't changed, or barely. His biggest change was "oh he can talk to women while drunk". And they made him more "gay". That's about it. The Penny/Leonard thing is forced, has been from the time they got together, well... more when they first split up. Made little sense and getting them back together was for the 100 episode. What might make it interesting is if he finally gets a pain in his face and dumps her.

Look at the opening credits, on past season it was the lads + Penny eating chinese takeout....this season it's all the lads + all the girls.

If that isin't "friends" i don't know what is!?....at some point Sheldon will start kissing Amy and he'll have this sexual awakening arc....cue uncomfortable Q&A sessions with Leonard for tv giggles and ratings.

By season 9 he'll have sex and so on......

Thing is i *get* the Penny for Leonard thing...she did the whole handsome/bad boy thing and got burned. She's very a-typical in terms of guy types. Leonard is the safe and husband role for the long term.

I'm 100% sure by series end they'll be married, but SHE needs to cut the crap at this stage and start treating him better!

Admit you love him you moo! :(

I ship Lenny and Penny....it's great to see the geek get the hot girl! :)

Ditto, though they could make it more believable in the dynamic. IMHO that's why people are often tired of it, where they weren't with Ross/Rachel. He was a geek/nerd and she was initially the ditsy daddies princess, yet it worked far better than the Leonard/Penny dynamic. They were much more believable. Why? I dunno, better writing helped I'd reckon. Plus if it was actual reality the Ross/Rachel thing would be more likely. The Leonard/Penny thing less so. NOt because he's a nerd, but because she would be more fully in or fully out about the whole thing. It's unequal a relationship in the dramatic sense. She's a waitress/actress going nowhere and he's a tenured college professor of physics. LIke I say she'd either not be interested or she would be the one trying to get a ring on his finger. By comparison Rachel in Friends was doing very well for herself thanks, so this part was missing.

As for the "nerd" getting the "hot girl"? [bitchy comment]judging from the pilot episode I saw this very evening, he looks the same, while her "hotness" seems to have a sell by date. To the degree that IMHO the Amy "Penny's soo hot" is starting to look a little... well debatable. Doubly so considering that the actress is the same age now as Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox was when they started in Friends.[/bitchy comment]

no point comparing this with friends, this will come up short in every aspect, ive accepted chuck lorre likes going for the cheap laughs and the most idiotic storylines, like in all fairness sheldon got a girlfriend before Raj, that says it all, and the not being able to talk to women has run it course,

i always thought Raj and Walowitz were by far the better actors for the roles they play compared to the other 3, and yet they get paid less, i think that plays a part also behind the scene, kunal nayer was pretty much told this is the deal were giving you, if you dont wanna sign it then best of luck in life to ya buddy, all cause hes character doesnt have as many lines, cause the stupid writers on this show cant come up with a decent storyline to justify him talking to women,

its ridiculus that the guy has been on the show over 5 seasons and only get $70k an episode, while helberg is getting $100k and the other 3 are getting $200k, and its also speculation that bialik get paid more than nayer and helberg,

    http://www.deadline.com/2010/12/big-bang-co-star-kunal-nayyar-gets-salary-bump-too/

ill still watch the show, but its just a shame its fallen so far from its height in the first 3 seasons:(,

Ouch indeed. Maybe they should have looked at the Freinds cast who banded together and asked for the same pay as a unit with the threat they'd walk if they didn't get it.

While your fellow employees are getting almost three times that for doing the same thing?

The funny thing is Kunal Nayyar seems the most down-to-earth and witty in interviews - he was the most talkative (ironically) and witty of the cast by far at ComicCon this year.

EDIT: Actually.. did they start hiding Mayim Blalik's hand in this episode? Noticed a few times that her hand was either behind a box / present or under blankets etc. For those who are unaware..

especially if a new person come in on the show in season 4, and is reportedly earning more than you, id be fairly peeved,

yeah it was like when cuoco broke her leg (was it last season or the one before) they never incorporated into the show, again that just to me shows that the writers just arent creative enough to incorporate it into the storyline,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭trendy88

Pointless comparing this to friends, the characters had so much more depth in that show. Seems like Penny is solely there as Leonards love interest. I used to love the nerdy high brow jokes of seasons past but they seem to be few and far between at present. The humour over the past few weeks/seasons seems to be cheap, going for the easy laugh rather than the intellectual stuff that made the show so popular to start with.

Cuoco's was easier to integrate.. she just repeatedly appeared behind the bar at the Cheesecake Factory or standing behind the counter-top in her kitchen.

Blalik's injury is a difficult one to hide.. she's just have various items covering her hand on each appearance.

I'll be honest. I'm not really hugely happy with where the show is now.

I've always been the geeky sort. Kind of an underdog, you know? And that's why I love TBBT so much. It's a show about the nerds, and their lives and struggles. And for the first few seasons I just loved all the geeky and nerdy jokes and references. It was just my thing. :)

In the past couple of seasons it's become clear that the object is to get a wider viewbase, and as such it's lost some of what it had originlly. :(

Nevertheless, I still enjoy it. I may not laugh as much as I used to, but I still really like the show. There are occasional jokes that really make me laugh.

I have mixed feelings about the beginning of Season 6. I enjoyed the episodes even though they weren't brilliant. Raj has always been my favourite character, and his parts in the first episode were really funny.

I'm also very glad that Stuart is becoming a regular. I've always loved him. I take it that he's going to take over from Howard with the Raj bromance and the "two guys can't be close without being gay" jokes?

Comparisons with Friends are silly, it's a Chuck Lorre show. There was a special on E4 after 100 episodes and he genuinely seems to think he's part of some kind of high art and ya just know he thinks the same about the other crap he makes. The nerd references and what made the show in any way different to begin with are pretty much gone now. I've hated the Amy character since she joined and I don't see that changing any time soon. The will-they/won't-they has been so abused as to not mean anything now. As Wibbs said, doing it for the 100th episode, the ****?!

Mayim Blalik is the only one who look like she's genuinely trying.

Ooooh that was terrible, they are introducing "Copy Shop Girl" to get between Leonard and Penny, I thought they had a great chance to have Raj have some fun, maybe have him have an email relationship with her or something. Howard in space is gringe-worthy as well. Finally, is it just me or is Sheldon bulking up?
