Housing Support Services

I am currently on Back To Work Enterprise Allowance and my spouse is recently unemployed, but not yet in receipt of any payment. We are both in our mid 20s.

Our financial situation has taken a turn for the worse since business became very difficult at the start of this month, which combined with my spouse's new unemployment the result that we had to leave our rented accommodation and temporarily move in with friends.

I informed the welfare office of what had happened. They urged me to go to the Community Welfare Officer and try to seek help with getting accomodation. The Welfare Officer said there was nothing they could do unless we were on a housing list. So I went to the housing section at Dublin City Council. They told us there is nothing they can do - quite paradoxically, they cannot say we have a housing need because we do not currently have a house. I told this this seemed like a catch 22 situation, and they agreed but said nothing can be done.

The woman there told me to go to the Homeless Support Service. I and my partner have never been homeless in our lives. In desperation, and by now feeling very upset, I waited outside this metal gate on Capel Street for a man to come out and ask me what I was looking for. I said my partner and I have nowhere to live anymore. He asked me a few short questions, and then said we weren't suitable, he made some negative comment about the services they offier, and said to try and find something else.

To be perfectly honest I cannot even bring myself to tell my partner what a fix we are in. We have €188 to live on and to rent accommodation and try keep the business going. We cannot stay living with friends for ever.

Is there any alternative service out there which you know of that can help or offer advice in these situations?
