Parts shop + trusted mechanic in Cork

    Hi all,

Some of you might remember my "quest to find a decent car that insurers would actually allow me to drive"; Such a quest has come to an end as I became the owner of a 1.4 Renault Megane.

The car drives very smoothly for a 2001 ride with a lot of miles on (140k!), has no leaks nor obvious issues but needs a little bit of care - afterall, I paid the price of a midrange laptop for it.

As I am able to do the minor jobs (a couple of lightbulbs need replacing, air filter, oil filter and oil change et cetera), I would need a good spare parts shop - Halfords won't suffice (and it's a ripoff).

I would also like to have some of the bigger stuff checked out to be on the safe side; I will probably have the timing belt redone as I always use to do any time I get a second-hand car (I just can't trust a bit of tippex on the cover). Any trusted mechanic/garage, possibly with good Renault experience?

    Thanks in advance :)

Good motor factors would be Desmonds down near Turners cross. Very old school place, cash only as far as I know!

    Desmonds as mentioned are great.

Motorway across from Harvey Norman are also a very decent factors and their neghbour's, Automotif (same owner) are a tyre depot / service centre staffed with mechanics rather than tyre fitters :)

    Bloody expensive though.

Always found Godfrey Kirby - a breakers yard out by Cloyne to be helpful and very reasonably priced. He's in the phone book. He arranged for a local mechanic to build and install a new gear box for me for a Lancer using the gearbox from a Colt for 250 euro all in when Dan Seaman's wanted close to 600 just for the part.

Motorway. I've left the shop a few times because of the prices, tools, primer, oil, filters etc. More expensive than Halfords on anything I've gone in for.

    No experience with Automotif.

Thanks guys, I just got a ~500 EUR quote from a Renault garage for the timing belt change (timig belt + water pump + fan belt + coolant + labour), which falls in the ballpark I expected. Any ideas where I can get other quotes (although I reckon it's better to go with the official garage for such a delicate operation).

    Thanks in advance again :D

Con forde, Powell motor services, mark Murphy, mccarthys garage... To name a few. No need to go to the dealer at all.

A bit different but.....I paid €180.00 for the timimg belt kit,,inc water pump.

Got the kit in Premier Auto Parts.

And My indie mechanic charged Me €150.00 or so for the labour.

    That's for an Octavia TDi.

O'Connor's in Glanmire are always reasonable.

I can definitely obtain the kit for the Megane...care to PM me the mechanic's whereabouts? I rather prefer giving my money to good people that work well than a big multinational company, you know :)

+1 on Joe Desmond's and I would mention O'Connell Brothers as well when it comes to motor factors (I deal with both of those on a daily basis).
