Alterations should take a couple of weeks. But it depends on how busy they are and how much altering is needed. They could do it in a few days.

Mine too 5-6 weeks. So be sure to check with a selected seamstress ahead of time. In her case, she was also very busy and was going away on holiday for a week.

I got mine in five months. Three fittings and alterations took it up to three weeks before the wedding, when I could collect the dress and bring it over.

I know some girls who give their wedding date as three months before to make sure the dress is in and altered without problems.

Yep, I actually gave a date 6 months out from our wedding date because this shop is known to have dresses come in very last minute and my dress has very long distances between where the shop is, where I live and where it'll be stored.

this is true. I asked for time estimate to get my dress done in time, got the date and then on the week I was supposed to pick it up she wanted me to leave it another week, just 2 days before the wedding!
I said no way and that I wasn't in town but gave her a bit extra time. So had to pick it up 4 days after the originally given date... Looking back I'd have simply given an earlier wedding date so they wouldn't count on the extra time for themselves.

    6 weeks is standard.
Be careful about getting it too early. The colour of the dress can fade if it isn't stored properly. Better to get the shop to store it for as long as possible imo.

A lot of shops won't store them now. Into a black dress back and into a wardrobe.

I got married on a Friday and my dress arrived in the shop the Saturday before. Everyone was freaking out bar me and the shop owner. My attitude was that the sample was my size anyway, so if the worst happened, she could have that cleaned and give it to me.

Anyway, it was grand - dress arrived on Saturday, I went in on the Monday for the final fittings, she did the alterations that night (for free, to apologise for the delay) and I collected it the next day.

    Hi all,

I was hoping to get my wedding dress in Ireland on my return this coming July. I have a few days to pick it out. The only difficulty is that I wont be back until a week before I am married to have any alterations etc. Is this unrealistic? your advice would be greatly appreciated!
