Decent jacket to stay warm, but not sweat?

    Hi folks,
looking for recommendations on a jacket that won't really be used for your typical running, but will be used for running from a van, up a few flights of stairs while carrying boxes and furniture in the pouring rain.

I've tried wearing jackets before but after one or two trips up a flight of stairs I end up with just a t-shirt on as anything else is too hot and sweaty.

Is there any jacket out there that will keep me warn on a windy winter day and at the same time, won't make me perspire like crazy after one flight of stairs?

It can't be too bulky either as I don't want it getting in the way while lifting furniture etc.

I guess getting wet is pretty inevitable, I guess I'm just looking for a way to cut down the chances of staying wet and catching a cold or something.

    Any feedback appreciated :)

    What about a waterproof gilet?
Your arms will get wet, but if your wearing a tshirt it'll only be the sleeves of the tshirt, with the core staying dry.

Saloman XR Jacket. Got one a few weeks back and have been used it on few colder evenings so far and its great. Lightweight but warm and breathable. Has 2 decent pockets too which are handy.

Hehe, are these not cycling tops though? just with the longer backside? I'd be more in favour of the sleeve and hood rather than sleeveless but thanks for the suggestion anyway. I wonder how warm they would keep me in the middle of winter, when it's not even raining and I'm not working, just going up town walking?

Two jump to mind which I use myself.

Brooks Hybrid Wind stopper is a long sleeve top with wind proof fabric on the front and breathable fabric on the back to let sweat & excess heat out. Its quick drying so if caught in a shower it will dry out but not chill you because of the windproof thing.

A jacket which is expensive but brilliant, is the Brooks Silver Bullet. Wind and water resistant with an aluminimum lining you will be dry and warm as toast without cooking as the back is vented.

    cormie,

Sounds like what you're looking for is a breathable top, that keeps rain out but also lets your sweat out. There are many of these available like those mentioned above. In my experience the Gore running jackets take a bit of beating e.g. http://www.goreapparel.co.uk/FLASH-GORE-TEX®-Active-Jacket/JGFLAS,default,pd.html?dwvar_JGFLAS_color=9900&start=11&cgid=grw-men-geartype-jackets-jackets Maybe a bit more pricey but totally do the job, keep wind and rain out and let sweat out. Look smart too so okay for walking up the town.

The problem many people have with breathable jackets is they don't wear breathable material underneath them. So if you wear a cotton t-shirt under your jacket, that's going to hold your sweat anyway, so you'll get sweaty no matter what you wear over it. so to get the best out of a breathable jacket wear breathable gear underneath also, like a running long sleeved top.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Would any of the jackets linked to above also double as a regular winter jacket for keeping warm or would I need a few layers or another jacket altogether for that? I'm thinking warm and cosy and lazy :)

Just having another look at the above. The gore one linked to above and the Brooks ones look decent.

Does anyone know a store around Dublin which sells either or both? Would be nice to be able to see how it looks and feels before shelling out such a price :)
