Insurance has increased?

I was wondering why my insurance has increased? I'm a 24 male driver and still on my provisional a year later. Failed the driving test twice. My previous insurance under my parents name was 750 with liberty and was around the 900 on other sites. Now its gone up to 1200 with a provisional and 880 if I pass my driving test soon enough under my parents name. Thought it would have dropped no? Tried a couple of sites and all coming back with the same thing. My parents have no penalty points and have no claims bonus which I know i cant use because there using it on another car. Any ideas?

Could be the car your driving has got an increased risk profile as a result of crashes or thefts throughout the year. Try calling each company for a quote rather than just checking over the web.

The Insurance companies change their rates all the time. Whilst it has to do with their claims experience for every category, they seem to be jacking up every premium lately to maintain their high profits....it's what they do.

My wife got her renewal premium this week (Zurich).

Last year she paid €480 with a 40% no claims bonus (base rate therefore €800)

This year the premium is €620 with a 50% no claims bonus ( base rate €1240)

Looking at this on a basic level it seems as if the base rate has gone up over 50%. They could not have had an adverse claims history on this demographic to this tune, so I assume they got hit on other life and household claims in their group?

It's a bit of a joke really but they will most likely lose business as a result.

Am i reading that right, 1200 as a named driver under your parents policy?

That sounds really high to me, we need to know the car, but if it's something low risk then I would expect you to be able to get your own insurance in your own name for that price, if not less.

Ring Britton insurance, they're good for learner drivers. Get a quote in your own name, you might well be surprised.

Top tip: Add your mother as a named driver, it'll take 200 off the price, maybe not precisely, but it takes a lot off it!

Thanks for the responses, its a 03 punto 1.2L and my own car. I also found it stupid the parent cant use there no claims bonus since they have another car. Its 1500 fully comp and 1200 third party fire and theft with 123 on provisional under parents name and basically same with other sites. parents have licenses over 35 years and never had claim or penalty point. Adding my mother to quote has made it dearer for some reason?

If i do pass my test its 880 third party and 1200 fully comp on 123. Same roughly on other sites. What a ****in joke! People are telling me that since there offering cheaper insurance for like 250 for expierenced drivers there increasing it for younger drivers. Still an utter joke in my opinion. Ill ring a few places tomorrow

Forget that man. I'm certain you'll get a quote in your own name for less than that. That way you'll get an NCB too.

Ring around tomorrow, online quotes are generally poor for anything other than the ideal customer, which you definitely are not. Ring as many as you can find.

Just as an example, I rang on behalf of my 19 year old brother and got him insured through Britton for under 1200 (1130 or something). First learner permit, not experience on a 07 Micra tpft. Can't remember who underwrites the policy, but there were no mad excesses involved and the cover was pretty standard fair.

Okay maybe I should have looked it up a bit better instead of going under parents name oops. Its 1100 euro if I pass the full not under parents insurance and 1700 for not under parents insurance on provisional. Still dear though. Its since I'm 24 I think it doesnt matter if im under parents name by that much. I'll ring up places tomorrow because I'm certainly not paying the all the prices I quoted allready for insurance. 1100 if I pass the test with a year expierence on my own on a 1.2L under my own insurance for third party, 1400 fully comp. Not a chance.

Lets be real though, there's really no need for fully comp on an 03 punto;)

Ring around and let us know how you get on:)

Id recommend first Ireland op.. They were the cheapest as they give learner discounts.. You need to call them though, u can't get an online quote!

Think again - it makes no sense to buy fully comp policy in your case, because if you claim, you lose more than they pay out!
Having NCB in your name gives you access to more insurers, given you turn 25 very soon your best bet is to take cheapest policy available to you now, and avail of better quotes in the future.
I don't even want to get into your current insurance situation - your own car insured under your parents name, who have another policy for their own car...
Honestly - get it right now, and you will benefit from it in the very near future.

yea I dont need fully comp. Just main point of thread is insurance has increased a lot for me since last year and is 1100 on my own for a 24 year old in a 1.2L not a bit pricey if I get the full and 1700 if I fail the license test on my own. Definitly wasnt this much 12 months ago! Maybe for a 18, 19 year old

Shopping around is the only option.
If it makes you feel better i paid 1800 in first year, as 25 years old, after a year it was only 1000 (with another company, who did not offer me a quote before). As soon as you have experience in your name, the premiums will go down, and it is not just 10pc... It will go down even if you don't pass your test (that is what happened to me). Insurance is based on many factors, so what was working for me, may not work for you, but - as many people here confirm - the first 1-2 years behind a wheel can be pricey. And - apart from shopping around - there is nothing you can do really. Good luck, try 123.ie .

I'm actually in similar circumstances as you OP. I'm a year younger at 23 but I got my full license 3 years ago (passed on 1st attempt :D). Been insured under my parents name for the past 3 years with Aviva, it expired 2 days ago. I've decided it's finally time to get a policy in my own name. In the end went with Liberty for €620 (3rd party, fire and theft). Pretty happy with that.

I would have said that €1100 for a 24 year old male with no NCB and who has just passed his test is pretty good no matter what car you are driving. As for the €1700; thats simply to be expected if you are on a learners permit.

Tesco/RSA have always beaten four shades of piss out of any other quote I've gotten, so if you haven't already then get a quote from them. In the past both myself and my wife were insured for 800 or so, and that was two learners with limited experience. A bit older than the op, and on a yaris, granted.

I'm pretty sure age has very little to do with it.

OP, my advice is to get your own policy and start building a NCB.

I think age matters when it comes to car insurance. Not the only factor in this case, but there is a reason why some insurers allow open drive policies for drivers over 25 only.

Go to nononsense.ie, get a quick quote changing age only, you will see what i mean.

I would say the fact you have failed your driving test twice might have something to do with it.

You shouldn't be quoted at all.

    End thread/

Failing the driving test has nothing to do with it really. Insurers don't care if you failed or not. You are either the learner, or full license holder.

OP, there is no substitute for ringing everyone. Someone will offer you a price you can stomach. Get your own NCB or you'll be in the same spot next year.

I've found First Ireland very good for me, although I'm not in the same position as you.
