If you want a good selection of HD channels, then I'm afraid paying $ky is your only option.

Freesat does HD channels but only a handful of them, but it is free.

RTE2 and BBC are available for free in HD, however in addition to the dish you would need a TV aerial (possibly on the roof) for RTE. If cash is very tight you could have a go at installing an aerial yourself.

The cheapest combined boxes are called "combo". These take the aerial and the satellite feed and give show the basic Irish and UK.

However if recording is very important to you and you want features such as series link then you would need to go for two seperate boxes. For the UK channels a "freeSAT +HD box" and for the Irish channels a Saorivew appoved PVR will be on the shelves by the end of October. So you would need to wait for the new Saorview box.

If series link and 7 day guide is not important then go for a combo. On most of them once you are recording, the choice of channels available to watch is limited so you can't record and watch any other channel at the same time.

For a combo, and a hard drive and a TV aerial installed you would want to buget 250 euro. For the best recording setup more like 450.

For best picture you would need a flatscreen TV capable of 1080p and larger than 32"

Please ask more questions if anyway unsure.

Just on this, you might get away with an indoor ariel, basically if you can receive TV3 even a crap reception then chances are you'll get perfect digital. I have my ariel lying in the attic, it's a cheap UHF ariel and can be bought for around €20. Buy a UHF ariel bring a portable tv and the ariel up to your attic and tune into standard tv3 (not digital) move the ariel around until you get a decent reception doesn't have to be a great reception, once you plug this into a saorview tv/settop box you'll have a perfect digital picture. If this doesn't work then you might have to resort to mounting the ariel outside but try inside first.
