it says a lot about OTB's recent output when the last few posts have been debating whether there is a market in Ireland for a sports radio station. It's very easy for complacency to set in.

    Enjoying the interviews tonight.

Think the time may have passed but 'arry was the perfect England manager 4 years ago. Even more so in hindsight considering the players they have brought through since then.

I'd be favouring Sam Allardyce myself.
As he said recently, if his name was 'Sam Allardici', he'd be a top four boss.....

Ha, that was a pretty funny tweet from Oisin Langan there about how Dan Shanahan could win the Tour de France if he chose to.

I think the novelty of Joe Brolly has worn off for me at this stage. I think the one thing that really annoys me about him is that for a professional man, he is SO rude. On the radio, he interrupts everybody, goes off on inane meandering sentences, and never gives anybody else a chance to get back in. On TV, slouched in his chair, again interrupting everybody, being extremely disrespectful to amateur sports players. I presume he doesnt behave like this in court.

I think he would get much more of a hearing from people if he behaved in a proper manner.

I thought Ger went way outside his brief when talking about the OJ - Made In America program last night. It's meant to be a sports show and Ger got in to the whole race riots etc etc... Nothing really to do with sport at all.

That Made In America program is well worth a watch though. It's very long but very interesting.

There does seem to be a yearning these days from a fair amount of people involved in sports media in general to link in politics to sports coverage as much as they can as a way of making sport seem more important than it is and there seems to be an expectation that sports people should be speaking out about social issues (at least I get that feeling from ESPN's website).

I think it comes from a perceived inferiority complex where sport in the past was dismissed by snooty academic types as not important and just games and now we have a complete over compensation by people in sports journalism who seem intent on dragging the greater world into sports discussion rather than just discussing sport.

In fairness, there isn't a whole lot going on in sport bar GAA atm. Probably a struggle to fill even two hours...

Yeah it'll be pretty quiet till the Olympics and Premiership is back

In fairness to Ger, it's kinda impossible not to make political connections about the black panther salute, every article I read or piece i've seen on TV about the salute were all political focused, I listened to pieces of the interview but I found it a bit intense for Off The Ball. The show really seems to be struggling without Parky these days.

I disagree. He wasnt even that funny, or good for "bantz"... He acted stupid all the time, and came across very ignorant of most sports except gaa.

Gilroy was annoying me again last nite. When Nathan said that McIlroy was a bit gratuitously disrespectful when he said "I'll watch diving, athletics.... all the IMPORTANT sports", Ger pipes up and says "ah, no he didnt really mean it that way". When it was clear that McIlroy was being a bit of a brat, possibly cos he is just sick of everybody judging him over this issue.

He then goes on to say "Can we not just enjoy him playing golf, should we really be looking to him as a 'leader of the community'". A few weeks back Gilroy was dragging Martin O'Neill across the coals for something he had said (and already apologised for). Are football coaches to be treated as leaders of the community but not world famous golfers?

They need to get somebody fun in and get Gilroy's ego out. Parkinson missed badly.

    That's a fair point.

Ah Ger Gilroy. Is there a more pompous or obnoxious person on Irish talk radio? He is the pits.

Hunty could be a good regular guest if they could get him He's not the sharpest tool in the box but he's quite entertaining.

Ger Gilroy is always focused on a 'narrative' at the expense of any common sense.

He was talking about Monaghan in GAA and how they have 'failed' to match the achievements of Donegal (winning All irelands). They didn't fail at all unless you consider not producing players near to the level of Donegal's as failure.

Dunno, I think that type of segue is what makes the show interesting.

I like the fact that they try to vary the conversation a bit but they are so bloody politically correct and inoffensive it's like having Jonathan Healy and Chris Donoghue presenting your sports show.

No editorial from Gilroy about the Nice attack? I was expecting something, especially given that they were all over there for the last month.

why is that cliodhna foley ditz let near any type of sports review. desperate to get her tuplence worth in at every opportunity which turns out to be some inane quote which she has highlighted from some other hacks article with a some attempt at wit in it which she follows up with a "tee hee hee hee". someone might want to tell her although there is a golfer called Andrew Johnson, he's not playing in the open though and he may actually be retired.

Anyone else have trouble listening back to certain podcasts on OTB?

Went on tonight to listen to the slot about the weekends gaa and it's playing about a quarter of the speed it should play...can't understand a word being said and it sounds like a "baddies voice" looking for ransom on a phone line.

A few pages ago I admonished some for being negative about the show....

Must admit, this week I've found myself feeling they're kinda dialing it in. Agree with all those that feel that Wooly has left a sizable hole.
Maybe it's the Euro's hangover, an indifferent GAA season and the shortened show and in 6 weeks or so it'll be different. Fingers crossed.

What has Wooly gone on to do?

I'm sure in time they will breath in a new contributor or two, actually they have now with the extra half an hour to come soon.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the constant revolving presenters is good for the show, personally I prefer Joe to Ger, not much in it either way, why won't they just put one on Monday to Thursday. Then someone else for Friday, often find they go back over stuff when they change presenter midweek.

wooly was only ever on for the first hour of the show, unless there was some GAA in the second hour, but he was never there after 9.
i thought they were trying to get billy joe padden to take it, since they did use him as a sideline reporter in the past, just like wooly was previously.

it's so feckin bland. and ultimately, joe is only really really comfortable talking about golf. it's like the lad who gets a new car or something, and tries to steer every conversation in that direction.
this extra half hour will be a mess. Chris Donoghue and Joe talking about why so many golf clubs don't allow women as members or something.

Just listening to the first GAA Hour. Was hoping he might throw a few digs at OTB. Not even a mention..

I like Wooly but this might benefit from a co host to lead him.

Interesting move. Leaving traditional radio for an online brand, someone else did that before didn't they....
