My friend couldn't understand how his dog ( Sheepdog Cross) was always hungry and no matter what he left down to him it would be polished clean. After a few days of this he got suspicious of something else eating it so sat upstairs waiting to see what would happen a low and behold from out under his decking comes a Pine Martin and polishes the dogs food. The dog was terrified of him!!

He had not a camera or phone with him so he took the attached the next day.

The video doesn't do him justice as He is massive for a Pinemartin but so would you if you were eating 22% protein nuts everyday!

    Hope the video works

Good to see them, I see a few around my area and even lucky enough to find a road kill and have it set up. There seems to be some correlation between Pine Martins and Red Squirrels, if I remember correctly the Martins have a preference for greys and hence give the reds a helping hand.

Pine Marten's can grow fairly big, much larger than a buck Mink! Nice to see them around!

Yep, the grey is a bit bigger and heavier than a red so is unable to escape by running out onto the lighter branches, hence the Grey is being controled naturally and our native reds are making a recovery.

Great vid, our own little Irish bear. Lucky to have such and esteemed visitor, we in Dublin could do with a few to teach the greys a few lessons.

Ye lucky divils having such a rare visitor. That fellah is huge, hopefully the dog and himself won't disagree about feeding rights.

    That's pretty interesting to know
I wonder why they prefer greys to reds
Wonder Would it be a case that the greys are abundant and that not all pine martins have come across a red and reds are very scarce

I beleive its because Greys spend alot more time on the ground and are less agile then Reds in the trees, which means they are easier to catch. Plus Greys are bigger then Reds and provide a better meal for effort expended hunting them.

Yes that was what I read from research papers from recent surveys.

A few years ago my garage was being raided by something that had got a taste for dog food and fishing baits. I baited a home made trap with a chicken leg inside a dustbin with a heavy rubber lid. The trap worked ok but there was a 4” hole eaten out as an escape route. Next came a mink trap, wire mesh and a drop gate at one end, baited with chicken. In the morning a 4” escape hole at the end made of mesh. Next, mink trap with a drop gate at both ends caught the culprit which was a Pine Martin and released fit but indignant. Tough little critters…

This video was taken a a good few months ago - another thread that was on boards regarding a pointer eating all under and over him reminded me of it!

There is a small wood and the river Suck but maybe 1km or so from the house, forgot to add the cat 'disappeared ' around the same time as the food started going missing!!

From what I remember he was actually living under the decking

Belgooly way.... Are you sure that this wasn't a mink? Didn't think there were any pine martins down this side of the country!?
