You haven't given any details so hard to answer really unless mystic meg is about. The diesel fanboys will just say yes anyway though.

    How much are you spending?
How many miles do you do a year?
What is your daily drive like?
Are you changing cars? If so whats the cost to change? How long will it take you in the diesel to make that back?

No one can give you an accurate answer unless your willing to provide as much details as possible in the first place.

Depends on your usage to be honest. If you are doing enough miles and the conditions that diesels work best then yes, it may be a better option. It also depends on the car - if the petrol equivalent was sufficiently cheaper to buy it is possible that there is no saving by going diesel.

If you mean "new car" as becoming first owner of the car, it is very unlikely that petrol would be better option than diesel regardless of mileage. Dislike for petrol cars in Ireland after 2008 means that your car depreciation would be much more severe than in case of diesel, negating any savings you can get on petrol.

Sorry lads should have added more details.

Its not costing me anything to change. Weekly driving is up at about 300-350km a week. I suppose second hand is what i'll be looking at. Like a passat or bora, corolla. Something along those lines.

Very roughly, at the present time, for a second hand diesel to pay, you need to be doing roughly 18k miles a year or more. If you're only doing say 10k -12k miles a year, you'll pick up a nice clean low mileage second hand petrol for a lot less than its diesel version, that also has costly DMF and DPM to go wrong, and dodgy laundered acidic diesel to avoid. Diesel is the fuel of Satan, I wish I was doing only 10-12k a year so I could drive petrol. I've been stuck with diesel for years and I flecking hate them. I'd love to go back to petrol. PS This opinion is very unpopular with the groupthink out there.

It means that every 1l / 100km in car economy would cost you 260-270E pa so mind it when looking at differences in price between diesel and petrol cars.

What's a DPM? And avoiding laundered diesel is easy, you don't go to the fella selling it twenty cent cheaper than the rest and use reputable brands. Why is it the fuel of Satan? It's efficient and saves you money by the looks of it.

    Sorry my bad. DPF.

And buying second hand you have no idea what quality of diesel fuel the last owner used. Pump and injectors could be half ate with acid and big bills just round the corner.

Yes, a diesel motor can work out cheaper, thats why I'm stuck with one.

But no need for one when doing lower mileage.

I agree but to be honest I don't see why it's the fuel of Satan. In fact, if my mileage ever drops I'm not sure I'd switch back to petrol.... And if I did it'd be a V8, When driving petrol I miss being vibrated about the place when idling and not being able to hear the loud tick of the engine.....

It's nothing to do with the mileage it's more to do with the intended use

To be honest, it's a combination of both. Particularly with "modern" diesels.

My surrent car is a diesel, thankfully without a DPF. But it does have a DMF. My yearly mileage is most likely going to drop over the next while, given a change in jobs. So I will most likely be reverting back to petrol when it comes time for me to change.
