    I'm in,

I was gonna follow it on MDA but I'd much rather do it with ye :D

could you possibly link some requirements or post up general guidelines for some less informed people?

edit, just saw your link :/ nevermind!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

A whole30 should sharpen up your observation skills ;):D

    Here's some additional links anyway

The Whole9 Forum is great, I've never used the MDA one

Shopping List I have 2 copies in plastic sleeves, one in handbag, one on fridge.

and the meal planning template which is a great reference.

I'm going to treat myself to the Whole30 daily email support too, have heard great reviews of it.

Printing the shopping list as we speak!

Delighted to see Coconut Milk in there, I will be replacing dairy milk with this in my coffee!

Wheredo you buy this brand? I usually pick up a few tins of the Aldi stuff, been fine so far.

Also have 2.5 litres of coconut oil on the way from amazon for super cheap!

I started reading your threads a few months back and made some changes so most of my meals are now paleo based but i'm still having the extras (choc peanuts / alcohol). anyway, going to do a full 30 days now, its opportune time as; i've loads work on so shouldn't be out drinking, am avoiding running into an ex in our locals (pathetic i know but may as well take advantage of the situation).

I could do with a boost so I hope this does it.

I drank wine & ate dark chocolate :D
I kept a post w30 log on the whole9 forum if you have a look there. I'm sure you'll find it easily enough ;)

I know for sure the Lidl stuff is non-compliant so my guess would be the Aldi stuff is aswell - too many additives, the only acceptable additive is guar gum.
They stock Thai Gold in Dunnes, the brand sometimes has a shelf to itself...their red & green curry pastes are also compliant.

You have to be a super careful label reader when doing W30.

I had a look at this. While it is interesting, I won't be taking part. There are some foods there I just couldn't live without!

I have never heard of coconut milk being used to replace regular milk so have a few questions. At this stage, the only milk I consume is in my morning porridge as all my tea is green and coffee is black. How would coconut milk affect the taste? Do you need to refrigerate it? How long does it last for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

Well you could, you choose not to :)

I think proper canned coconut milk would be gross in porridge, the Kara stuff in cartons works well, lots of additives in it though. It keeps in the fridge for 3 days after opening asfair.

I'm going to join you guys on this, it should be fairly interesting. I'm going to have a tough time giving up Babybells, all the other cheese, as well as butter. Would anyone know where I could get ghee(haha)? I'll keep the fats as high as possible and I'll be skipping breakfast as I function well like this!

get some coconut oil for all your fatty needs http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056721735

    Great, welcome on board :)

You can get ghee in Down to Earth on Georges St but it's 15.50! I'm sure they'd have it Asia market too, but you'd have to check the ingredients very carefully.
I clarify my own butter it's easy peasy.
I.F and W30 are not happy bedfellows.

I'll be watching with interest - although don't think I'm ready to take part yet but recipes would be great. I've printed all the links off you posted & I might just try it for November, I've already cut grains, potataoes and most dairy from my diet in the last week but keep making silly slips - eating the crust off dd's toast  & using stock cubes but I guess it's a learning curve and all a hell of a lot better than were my diet was in May.

yeah sugar free stock is a bugger to find. Well done on all the positive changes you've made so far.

yeah stick my name down please Iv been getting in good shape lately eating relatively close to a paleo diet but I'd like to do a perfect month. I think for me the grains will be the hardest to give up they always find their way in there somehow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,145 ✭✭✭Katgurl

So it's basically lean meat, veggies, eggs and fruit? Im using coconut oil for cooking and olive oil for salads.

Am I on the right track here?
Are turkey rashers allowed or are they too processed?

I know Cordain said elan meat but if you're eating decent quality meat you don't need to worry about that fat at all, I certainly don't!
Have a look at the two links - the shopping list & meal planning template in my #2 post (?) they will set you on the right track.
I think turkey rashers would be out, prob contain sugar and/or sulphites. never had them myself. The Dunnes simply better rashers are delish, really thick cut, and sugar free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭holdfast

I am in, I was planiing to go paleo for the next fifity days till my birthday. Might not stick totally to the whole 30 program.

its going to be hard as I have few weeks ahead over the period out of home. but lets do it.

Thanks - after reading the shopping lists I was looking at ham and bacon in Supavalu today - not one had no sulphites/sugar listed. I was amazed at how much they cram into an inoccous looking slice of ham! So even if not even 80% yet it's making me more shop aware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

For ham look at Parma/prosciutto/seranno ones, forget the Denny type, lost cause.

You'll be shocked when you start reading labels thoroughly the amount of ****e in stuff. Hopefully most of the stuff you buy will haveno labels anyway :)

    Right Day-1, how's everyone set?
    • Be sure to take before photos/measurements in the morning & then *put the scales away*
    • Have in mind today what you are going to have for breakfast & lunch tomorrow
    • Write down some goals for your W30.

My goals will be the same as my last one

Fruit will not be a snack or desert, the only time I'm having it is as part of/end of a meal (this is going to be very hard for me). This will also cut out the lashings of almond butter transported on apple slices.
I will eat a proper post work out snack
    I will drink water
I will limit my coconut milk to once a day - so either in my coffee or over post-dinner berries but not both.
I will eat veggies at every meal, including breakfast, and will follow the meal template.
    No sneaky weigh-ins!
Meals at table! the interweb will still be there in 20 minutes.

Thank you, I'll check out Down to Earth next weekend. I'll also look into clarifying butter because it sounds fun. And I'm going to read that thread now too, though I know from personal experience that I do a lot better in class without breakfast, my concentration levels are much higher.

I'm really looking forward to this, I'm going to eat a lot of apples, avocados, strawberries and eggs as a staple every day, and then try to cook different, interesting meals.

Just weighed myself and measured my waist, 13 stone 5 pounds and 35.6". That's after a three day binge of pizza! It'll be interesting to see what they change to at the end of the month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 701 ✭✭✭Reality_Check1

done my shopping earlier so Im all set. will take one last weight measure in the morning and then put away the scales until the end. Going to get a dominoes this evening I think as one last meal before the start. Have been eating 80% paleo for the last 3 weeks so I need a cheat day before going 100% :D

Egg loaf in the oven :)

I ran all my veg through the fine grater of the food processor - half a small butternut squash, 2 small parsnips (woody part removed), red onion, 1 courgette (seedy part removed).

Fried up a pack of pork mince (M&S, outdoor bred, €3.50) added in a tablespoon or so of sausage seasoning - see below - great recipe, I make up a jar of it at a time.

Add the veg & let it soak up the juices and soften a bit

In a large bowl, crack 9 egg (going for 6 portions) whisk up with salt & pepper and a splash of water, add your meat & veg mix and stir until well combined.

    eta - finished product

    f6711ab60b1e11e2bde812313b08e061_6.jpg
Pour in to a lined (with foil or greasproof) roasting tin and bake at gas 4/180 until done, about 30-40 minutes.

Divide into 6 portions. I usually put 4 pieces in a lunchbox in the fridge and 2 in the freezer.

Zap in microwave for 1 minute each side to reheat

***Frick, just realised I forgot to add my spinach, grrrr.

Italian Sausage Seasoning from Well Fed

    4 teaspoons dried parsley
    1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs
    2 teaspoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoons coarse (granulated) garlic powder
    2 teaspoons paprika
    4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons fennel seed (listed as optional, but in my humble opinion this ingredient is crucial in an Italian sausage! )

Mix these ingredients together and add a few spoons to your meat. I doubled the recipe and it filled a mason jar so I could use it again. Delish. You’ll want to mix it up well, of course.

Eh no ted. Are you in Dublin? The butcher in ilac sells billtong which is compliant. It's the south African version of jerky.
Ideally you won't be snacking and if you do need one it should be a mini meal.

I also made ghee for the first time. I ususally just clarify my butter but this stime went a step further :)

All set... Meatloaf from everyday paleo in the oven... Breakfast & lunch prep'd
Will take my measurements before bed, got strongman training at 6.30 so not a chance of me doing them before that!

I too need to stop the almond butter overdoses, mega addiction!

Oh look here comes the girl with the dopey questions ....
does this taste "eggy" ? - one of the reasons that paelo seems difficult for me is that I don't eat eggs or fish. I hate quiche and omlettes but this looks kind of good but don't to waste all of that food to find out I don't like it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

Ah feck it. I'll survive anyway! Just ate nine Babybels, so the fridge is clear for tomorrow. I have eggs, steak, mince, mushrooms, onion, bacon and broccoli to last until Thursday. And a lot of butter, which I'll be longing for over the next thirty days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

@boxer. Less eggy than quiche as there's so much meat & veg in it but might still be too much. You could do a mini test version.

@funkz. Double check your bacon is sugar free. Butter freezes well if you want to save it out of sight. Or make clarified butter or ghee for cooking with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

So how is Day 1 going guys?

Try to remember that while your Whole30 is a big deal… it’s not really that scary at all. It’s just 30 days of eating real food that tastes great and nourishes your body—simple, natural, easy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

Writing on my phone so it's difficult to say much. Though so far I've eaten four eggs, and a packet strawberries. I bought avocados but they're rock solid, and fit for the bin. Disappointing. Later I'll be having eggs, butternut squash and maybe some form of meat for dinner, onions and maybe some broccoli. Feeling good =]

Don't throw out your avocados. They'll ripen in a few days. If you want them to ripen faster, apparently placing them in a brown bag with a banana is supposed to help them ripen more quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

Don't throw out the avo's, Blueskye is correct. It's really hard to buy just right avo's so I always buy ahead & ripen at home.

And do remember to follow the meal template for every meal
Animal protein + lots of veg + fat and add seasoning :)

    Day 1 for me

7.30am slice of egg loaf & black coffee

9.30am - Gym, Wave 5/3/1 of Bulgarian Split Squats, close grip bench press, one arm rows

11.30am - Cinnamon coffee with coconut milk

12.45 - chesnut mushrooms, cherry tomatoes & spinach fried in ghee with 2 slices bacon & a fried egg

3pm - few carrot sticks & some sun-dried tomato pesto at a fellow w30'ers house, decaf coffee

5.45pm - Cottage Flower Pie from Well Fed with white cabbage sauteed in ghee.

then had some sliced banana (less than one small one) & coconut milk...not necessary or clever, but the kids wanted "desert" so I was making it for them and wanted some for me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

Butternut squash and broccoli in the oven. Gonna fry some meat with it. I kept the last avocado, only bought two! What's everyone's take on goose fat? Saw some in Tesco!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭lorrim

Day 1 done :) was good, felt a little hungry in the eve as I got delayed at work and didn't really want to eat a snack, dinner wasn't going to be far away...

    Here's how it went:

05:30 handful of hazelnuts & an espresso

06:15 1 hr of strongman bootcamp

08:00 made a wrap from thin plain omelette, smoked salmon & avocado

    13:30 chicken & beetroot salad

19:30 everyday paleo meatloaf, roast butternut squash & brussel sprouts

Couple of green teas throughout the day... Drank soooo much water, office was roasting so kept wanting the stuff...

Feeling a bit tired but usually am around now with the early starts...

Day 2 breakfast & lunch is in the fridge ready to go.
