    Hi all,

Anyone using Ripplecom in the mid/south Longford area, moving there in a month or so, no fixed line broadband to the house im moving to. Was looking at their 8Mb package. They told me the closest mast was in Ardagh and it should cover me. just wanted to see what people thought of the service and if it was good for online gaming etc. Thanks

    Hi

So Digiweb did not work out for you then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭tiny timy

Nope, cannot do it to the house. Only way is satellite or a miracle, but i've seen on other review where satellite is not much good for on-line gaming as there is serious latency issues.

How about Imagine WiMax? Their map shows full coverage for your area. Worth a look.

I've just upgraded to 8MB and the ping is wild. Not suitable fro gaming at all. Intend to complain tomorrow. I'm in the Ballymacward, Galway area.

I was with Ripplecom a few years ago, had been their customer since they were called Ardmore actually. Go with them if you have no other choice, but don't expect even a competent gaming experience with them. Completely unsuitable service for gaming.

i have to defend ripplecom on this one i play games on-line (cs) and my ping is always 14 to 32..... i think it really depends what base station your signal is coming from http://www.speedtest.net/result/2248619446.png

This is pretty much my experience too, ping probably averages around 25 - 35 so no gaming issues.

Just on the gaming end of things...
I'm with Ripplecom a year, I play COD/Battlefield/etc.. my ping is usually around 80-120ms when (if) the broadband is working. Not great at all. Especially when it is exaggerated with online hosts/servers around the world. It works out between 250-400ms latency for online gaming depending on the day really. So face-to-face online battles, you'll lose most times. How I know is, when I watch the kill cam after I die, I can see it registered as I got no hits on the opponent, even though my screen said I shot him a few times in the real-time play.
Or if I watch the replays of my games, I can see exactly how laggy and poor my broadband really is, and how my aiming real-time, is no where near the aim the actual game server says I was.
Bascally, Ripplecom sales team tell you the 8M package is the way to go for gaming, but be warned, it's not ideal, and is still frustrating as hell for gaming.

    kcummims,

have been with lastmile, now ripplecon, from ardagh for a few years, its ok if you are only want to browse and send a few emails
as other posters said dont expect much in the evenings /night weekends not great either.
what tends to happen, if you complain your service will improve for a while then revert back i am on the 3mb package, speeds can drop to .1mb d/l regulary with pings in 100's , expect downloads in the evenings to drop to sub 50 k. I know that they have upgraded ardagh to 8mb dont know how thats working, i know of one person who has it but they recon its flakey enough too, only still with then as theres no other option

No, I'm in Meath West (near westmeath border actually). I can't comment on the Longford region, maybe their wireless infrastructure is better there, I just wanted put you wide to the gaming situation. Sometimes I can game and it is ok, but forget about gamingin the evening as another poster said. Peak times are not a gamers best friend. Mornings, early afternoon, or 4am after a heap of pints is the best time.

Oh and has Nagel said, if you complain to ripplecoms technical team, they boost your broadband speeds to shut you up, but this rarely lasts long, and you're back to square one again. I don't know how many times I've had issues with the service in the past year.

I've had this on occasion. I am one of those who doesn't have huge problems with Ripplecom, I'm even happy with then compared to the alternatives, but their support can be less than perfect. It seems that speed fixes etc are very temporary just to get you off their backs.
