    Hi.

My mother in law who lives in a small mid terraced house gets her gas boiler serviced every year through Board Gas who send out an RGI.
She was telling me she was to get it done this year, but was recommended by the RGI last year that the boiler could blow up at any stage and his recommendations was to install a new one for E2500. He then proceeded to tell her that the lead pipes would have to be replaced and this would cost approx E5500 along with the boiler.
The overflow pipe was also leaking and she asked him to look at it and he told her it was the gutters.
Looking at the boiler its about 20 years old and serviced every year, and I have not found one lead pipe in the house its all copper.
I am at a loose end here thiking this lad is going around ripping the elderly off.
What would you recommend we do?

I think that's the best I've heard yet. Scaremongering at it's best.

report him.if the boiler could"blow up" at any stage,he should have isolated it and issued a notice of hazard.i hear these scaremongering stories told to customers every day and they really piss me off.

i heard another beaut like that today, a nice lady, paid €2400 cash for a new boiler during snow of 2010. paid over €550 1 year later to bring the boiler up to an acceptable standard by another company inc about €400 for re-wiring.
i serviced it and first thing i see is 13a fuse and no p/l !

op - SHOP AROUND and try get a word of mouth recommendation from somebody

ive been to 10 boilers this month all serviced or socalled serviced by a company
sub con for bord gais i wont name them cause im unsure if im allowed to on here most rgi lads will prob know who im on about anyway neary everyone was told they needed a new pcb board and others needed to replace ther boiler. when most had small issues like a jammed differential pin or faulty thermistor . these are glorified salesmen who try to scare people into changing ther boiler especially old people .i honestly dont know whether they do it on purpose or they just dont have a clue
