Boxer. Not boxing.

Hi all, bit of bother and need suggestions - we've a Boxer, an '03 2.0 hdi - on a run to a job(a looong run) today it suddenly lost power, dropped to 2000 revs and judders like a juddery thing doing 20kph and emitting smelly white smoke.
Seeing as I was 280km from home I did the only sensible thing possible, ignored it totally and drove on. The top speed varied from 20kph to 80kph- foot to the floor - power seemed to come and go with no rhyme or reason and big gaps inbetween.
Loong drive home and fairly peed of, I dropped it at the mechanics and got a lift home in another yoke. So, is my turbo toast, my pump polluted or my rings in a hoop? Any suggestions. And yes, it has big miles up, but well serviced and running on full syn 0w40...:(

What were the oil and water levels like when you got home? Could be just a split pipe to the intercooler.

Hi RovJ, don't think it has one - intercooler that is, just a turbo, water and oil fine. My guess is the turbo is bunched which is €350 for a recon one plus fitting, but it could be somthing simple that I'm overlooking and i'd hate to fit one in vain. Up to my tonsils at work as well, vans are in short supply so could do without this tbh. Idling like a bag of spanners.

There is a sensor on the gearbox that goes on these, and causes exactly these symptoms. Get the map/maf senso checked also.
    Hope this helps.

Mechanic did a compression test(said he did anyway) and claims no compression on cylinder 1 - points to rings gone. I'm just not so sure, I reckon it's electronic - every now and then it all comes back together and it flies again only to go back snorted after a few miles. Lot of white smoke today(yep, I drove it a fair bit today, i've not had time to buy another and everything else is being used, tbh it was utterly dire and I spent most of the day at 20mph:mad:). Which sensor is that one Pred, advice much appreciated.

That happened to a work connect we had, I think it's called limp mode. Ecu does it as a preventative/protective measure. Can your mechanic put it on diagnostics?

did that - injector failure cylinder 1 and 3 which is a symptom, not the issue. Limp mode on these is 2000rpm minus the moke and juddering.Edit: Killed it driving it home. RIP, POS.

Your in that funny semi big- small van segment where there isn't much more to choose from rather then from the obvious. Transporter, swb transit etc etc

No more Boxers, Relays or Ducatos. Every one I've had has died of engine failure. Transit, hmm, I've a few and I'm sick of them - too thirsty and too slow and noisy, and The VW Transporter, I genuinely know absolutely nothing about them and have never even sat in one - so I can't judge them really at all. Any good?

Could you stretch to a secondhand swb sprinter?

Whisper it, but I've got one, and it's as dull as ditchwater(never breaks tho) - I let someone else drive it. Not a Merc fanboy, had them in the past, they're fast but dear to fix, which seems to happen often.

Transporter.... a load of junk, all die of engine failure and little else. Give the Transit a spin you'll be surprised how much they've improved, a dramatically changed vehicle. 06 onwards are very quiet and economical, a far cry from the noisy thirsty slug up to 00'.

Well is sounds as though you've tried everything else out by now. I've never driven one, but had a couple of caddys old and newer models and they were reliable. Majority of trades over the last 10-15 years were driving them, suck it and see.

Thanks Jc, I've 4 of them. Thirsty and soft is my view there...someone else drives them...Blimey, it's looking like another Hiace, jasus, they're dull tho.

Sprinter is comfortable, the larger bhp ones are quick alright, even with a heavy load. But they are thirsty as fcuk. Horrendously so. Reasonably reliable. They do have a habbit of going through steering racks and gear linkages and wheel bearings though.

Have you ever had a primastar/trafic/vivaro?

No- Lovely to drive(was passenger in a few)apparently, but not sure how it would stick the severe hacking I give a van. They get started and stopped a huge amount in any day and do big miles full of tools and equipment. The tool is often driving!

They aren't as bad as ya might think. 1 of my fathers survived 195k miles. All it ever got was abuse, it was never off the road and never serviced properly. Always had a load on board too

Iveco is owned by Fiat. Tis their "industrial" subdivision :)
