looking at buying a disc mower next year and dont need a conditioner on it as we rake it in anyway.so first thing does anyone have any problem cutting heavy crops of silage with an non conditioner mower.how many acres an hour would you do.is it an option to buy a second hand one with conditioner and throw it off completely.would 100 hp handle a 10 ft non cond one.are the malones any good.reckon this season would have tested them well

A friend of mine traded a Kuhn for a Malone 10ft this season. He recons its the best mower he ever had. Tough as nails!!

I thought Malone only made 7' & 8' mounted disc mowers and the trailed conditioner mower was 9' 6". tho its some months back since i was looking.

But is one season, enough to judge it's toughness, albeit a testing season:o

Havent got one yet but the neighbour has an 8ft lely on a 390t and complains he is sorry he didnt go for a bigger one as he hardly knows its running behind it 100Hp would handle a 10ft non conditioner no bother, you will save a bit on diesel aswell cutting the extra few feet on each round, i wouldnt say heavy crops make any difference as its the conditioner part of the mower that usually slows crop flow, another advantage is you will be able to top with it and also cut down arable silage without knocking the head off.

looking at doing the same next year too, have looked at maybe a class disco, or maybe a khun or lely (think they might actually be the same). was chatting to a few lads round here and they all told me to stay away from some of the newer models on the market like the Italian ones as they are designed for cutting light crops for hay and not really suitable for cutting heavy grass.

get a contractor in to do the silage but was thinking about getting my own mower that i can use to mow the silage myself and to also do the topping.

How have ye found the class, kuhn, and JF's? does not having a conditioner on them make a big difference when it comes to baling the silage.

doing a bit more looking around and see these ones that are mounted in the centre and they look like the job to follow the ground and are supported on the outside of the cutterbar.anyone have one/see one working

What are the makes / models mounted like this?

have a kuhn mid mounted mower. It follows the ground alot better than the standard mounted mower. There the type of mower to buy if youre going for a mounted mower.

it seems alot of them do them but they are pricey by the sounds of it.seem to be more popular on the continent.it s just that they look like they follow the ground well and better supported

What money are you looking at? I presume you'll buy a new one?

Have a look a pottinger they make good solid stuff that's trouble free few lads round here have them and no bother. The new Kuhn s are an bit lighter than they were, some beds cracking from rough handling the older ones were pretty bullet proof! They r still pretty good. Don't know much about the rest although class r good.

I think you can remove the conditioner easily on the mounted Pottinger mocos too.

was thinking of a new one but those mid mounted ones are nearly twice the price so was just considering a imported second hand one from the continent
