What's the advantage of this over an ordinary wireless mouse? Do you actually get "smoother pointer control" or something? And why would you want to control a smartphone with a mouse?

    /display of old age/general noobness

There are a couple of advantages.

A laptop has limited USB ports, but often has built-in bluetooth. So a bluetooth mouse shouldn't need a dedicated usb dongle taking up a precious USB port.

Some phones can output their display over HDMI. Some can even provide access to the underlying Linux operating system, with Firefox, file manager etc. (e.g. Motorola Atrix). A mouse is pretty useful for that.

On the down-side, the battery life of a bluetooth mouse tends to be less than a proprietary one like Logitech's newer ones.
