Hi, looking to upgrade my dell xps m1530 ram & harddrive
I'm going to get a 16mb sata.. no problem finding one of them
but the ram..I currently have 4gb, can some sites say the maxium I can have is 4gb and other say teh max is 8gigs.. the dell site says its 4gb here
Has anyone got the same system that can confirm(and recommend) that they have their system at 8gig?
    thanks!

You currently have 2x2 GB, you'll have to change both for 2x4 GB. Quite pricey, memory upgrade here or here

Why do you want a 16 GB SSD? Best bang for buck are currently 128GB SSDs

Hank you for your reply Torgar,

The memory upgrade is quite expensive alright, is there any particular reason for this?

So it is DDR2 800MHZ ram I laptop ram I am looking for?

Is it possible to go with ddr3?

The harddrive I am going with would be a 500gb 16mb cache, there isn’t really much of a difference in the 8mb & 16mb maybe 20-30euro

Do you think it would be worth going for it? the reason I went for it as I thought it would be better for when I am unraring large files & iso’s etc.

The laptop is a T8400(I think) duo core so these two little upgrade I am hoping to get another 18months or so out of her

Wish I could do the same. Mine finally fell over due to the GPU overheating flaw.

Older memory is always more expensive than the current range. Rip off, but that's the way it is.

    Yes.

    No.

Personally, I'd go for a "real" solid state disk rather than a hybrid drive.

I'd stick to 4 GB and a 32-bit OS and just fit in a real SSD (128 or 256 GB, depending on your needs). Since a memory upgrade is quite expensive expensive, it isn't really an economically viable option for 18 months.

yea your right its not worth it. especially since the mobo can fail(I've gotten 3/4 years so far out of this lappie!)
Does the SSD drive just go into the normal slot and replaces the current drive?
I see one on bargain alerts here for 65 pounds, dono if I could manage with 128gigs!

C'mon 128 GB is plenty, I can manage with a 4 GB SSD in my netbook (got a couple of SD cards if I want to bring some videos) ;)

Ah I'm like a haorder with disc space. right now I have my space trimmed down as much as i can and I suppose I have used nearly 50gig.
I'll prob put my current harddrive into an enclosure and connect it to my wireless n router so speeds should be good enough to use that for offsite storage.
thanks for all your help again, just one last question from reading a bit online, if I see a ssd2 for cheaper should I go for that, as I think 3gb is the max the laptop can take?

You mean SATA II or SATA III? Good point. Your XPS M1530 wouldn't benefit from SATA III (the controller doesn't support this standard), but they are backwards compatible of course.

You may want rethink that, unless you need it to run 64-bit applications. You won't have all of the 4 GB available to a 32 bit OS (3.13 GB) but the 64-bit version requires a lot more memory for itself and your laptop isn't exactly a powerhouse. MS min requirements for Win7 x86 1GB, Win7 x64 2GB RAM.

Go to blackviper.com and read about service tweaking and look up SSD tweaks to get more out of your purchase.

hmm, i've installed fresh now & done the updates.. 87 free of 111.. don't know how i am going to cope with this space! :/
have to say though the laptop has been quite very hot, don't think ive ever felt it this hot before!
I was under the impression that windows 7 32bit is only going to read 3.5 gigs avail?
I might go with your advice as its been good and helpful and install 32bit ?
either way they would be nearly the same with free ram wouldn't it?
64 bit would have 2 gig free.. 32 bit would have 2.12gig free?

64 bit is a little bit more demanding and it requires more HDD space.

And 3.13 GB should be reported, unless the system shares memory with the graphics card.
