Was in Cobh the other day and it go me thinking about various road projects which could be built in Ireland but would have basically no justification from either a finance or population density point of view.

The obvious one I was thinking of would be either a suspension bridge or tunnel from Passage West in Cork to Rushbrook to serve the Cork to Cobh route. I would imagine such a project would ever only be undertaken if Cobh had a 50,000+ population and if Dunkettle was getting completely over loaded as such a bridge coud serve the East Cork to South of Cork city traffic.

Another stupid one I was thinking of would be bridging the entrance to Cork harbour from Trabolgan to Crosshaven. No justification for this in my mind, although Ireland could have it's own Golden Gate bridge.

Another obvious one I could think of would be a suspension bridge crossing of the shannon estuary from somewhere in North Kerry or Limerick across to Clare. Eradicate the need for the Shannon Ferry.

Athlone southern bypass bridge to shorten the physical journey on N6. Also the N55 motorway upgrade. Personally would love to be able cross the border in under an hour. Generally better motorways that serve commuters in galway and limerick

    Irish Sea Rail Tunnel.....oh wait!

The Irish Islamic Chamber of Commerce believe that Islamic bonds or sukuk could be the key to building road and rail link tunnel under the Irish Sea.

The chairman of the Irish Islamic Chamber of Commerce (IICC) Muhammad Hafez said that the Government could access €20 billion plus in funding through Islamic financing that would allow Ireland to build the Irish Sea Tunnel that was originally proposed by the Institute of Engineers Ireland in 2004.

Bridge from Passage East -Arthurstown in Wexford and a bridge linking the the Aran Islands together and then another from Innisheer to the mainland something like the Florida Keys & Key West bridges. This would link Kilronan to Lisdoonvarna (N67) in the form of a new National Secondary Route the N88.

    The Russians do it best....

    Fromthe economist

THE bridge to Russky Island, a wooded swathe of land just off the coast of Vladivostok, is quite the architectural marvel. It is the longest cable bridge in the world, measuring 3,100 metres, it is as tall as the Eiffel Tower and it cost $1 billion to build. All of which may seem a bit much, given that only about 5,000 people call the island home.

While you're at it why not the Galway City Southern Bypass from Bearna to Renville. If nothing else it'd make Galway Bay Golf Resort & the Marine Institute more accessible.
