Make an impression in the ground with your heel, place the bait in it, put the cage on top of it with the trigger plate slightly in front of the bait, pack stones all around the cage so nothing can dig in under the cage. When the mink will go in he will have to stand on the plate to try and get down to the bait. Use the leg of a rabbit or a magpie from a larson trap something big so he cant pull it through the holes and he will put all his force on the plate to get it in.

mice and shrews i would imagine,,ive often had the same problem tinned fish like sardines is useless when this is happening so like patdahat said above use magpie or something which wont be stolen as easily,,a whole trout sliced in several places to relase its smell works nicely aswell

It's probably something to do with the cage your using! Adjust the bar so's the pan is very delicate! I alway's tie fish heads to the top of cages. If their eating fish heads on you then it's not mice, more so small rats! Get your cage working proper and you'll solve the problem!!
