Right, I do wear heels but wouldn't be that confident in walking in them so I rarely do wear them. So... Does anyone have any tips to walk properly? I feel so wobbly and awkward in them. xD

Best thing is to wear them around the house, break them in and get used to the feel of them. Practice makes perfect. :)

If you ever did Irish dancing, remember everything you learned in that. Shoulders back, head up and walk heel to toe properly.

Don't flex your ankles as much as you would if you were in flats. It's all in the legs, not the feet. Stand up straight and don't arch your back/tilt your hips. Remember to lift your feet off the ground (Okay, so it's not ALL in the legs), a lot of girls I see on nights out don't seem to be taking actual steps.

The shoes themselves can help too - work your way up from lower heels. Boots or heels with an ankle strap give your foot more support and take some of the work off your ankle. If you can handle a high enough heel, platforms are a lot more comfortable on the balls of your feet than normal heels. The thicker the heel the better if you're finding it difficult, so don't go straight for stilettos. Make sure they fit - wear tights when you go shoe shopping if you'll be wearing tights with the shoes.

To be honest the best advice I can give you is don't go out in them until you can walk in them. There's nothing worse than watching someone tottering around in shoes they can't wear, and if you find it hard to walk in them you'll probably be in pain within an hour or so of wearing them. A bit of discomfort is ok but if your legs/ankles are actually sore, just don't put yourself through it.

Ever hear of the book "How to Walk in High Heels" by Camilla Morton? It's a guide to a lot more than just clothes etc but there is a chapter on shoes.

As for my own advice for you: get a pair that are comfortable, and sturdy. It helps a lot if it's a good sturdy shoe because if the shoe is flimsy then you won't feel confident enough in it to put all your weight on it.

Practice makes perfect. Wear your heels around the house, when you're doing the hoovering etc. I still do it now when I get a new pair.

As t-o-f said, heels with a strap in particular are easier to wear as they give you more support - you're not worrying about keeping the heels on while you step.

+1 on the book. Really great advice in that thing.

Start off wearing them with no tights or socks. Your skin sticks to them better.

Heels are always harder to walk in if they don't have any foot support. Get a pair that don't flap up and down when you walk. Insoles really don't change this so if the heels don't fit, don't buy them.

Start in wedges, Always the easiest to walk in. Casual ones, with laces. This will secure your feet and give you the confidence. You cannot be a shrinking violet in heels, even if they are scruffy heeled boots, you have to walk tall!

Also contemplate taking dance classes that you have to wear heels in. All the latin dances like salsa... try http://www.danzon.ie/ for classes that wear heels (some of the classes are more gym-style). And Burlesque is also another idea.

    Good luck.
