Adjusting Golf Clubs

Was down at the range this morning for a bit of practice (joys of working part time) and after was chatting the pro. While talking i was looking at the equipment he uses for custom fitting and noticed the shaft measurement stick. I measured 0.75" short for shaft length in my irons. Never knew this. He gave me ex demo clubs to try out which are 0.5" shorter than my own. He also told me to stand more upright which is the opposite from what i was told in my lessons last year. Hit it sweet every single shot.

I used a Di9 like my own and Titleist AP1 demo clubs - would have a custom fitted set of Ap1's in the morning if I had the cash!!

He can shorten all my irons if I want to but was thinking after - if I do shorten them its permanent whereas if I got the lie adjusted and just gripped down a bit would I be better off? Any ideas / comments greatly appreciated.

They can make them longer again, they add in a little insert called a shaft extender
and bobs your uncle. You could try something like shortening every second one and see if it makes any difference...?

ahh, didn't know you could extend them again, thanks for that Greebo.

Gonna play Sunday and then get them shortened Monday and see how I get on.

Suggest you try getting the 5 iron shortened and the 6 iron made more upright or vice versa and see how they perform. You will probably find a different feel from the two types of adjustment and you can choose what you like best.

If the lie adjustment you suggested works out it will be much cheaper than having the clubs shortened as either the grips have to be saved which takes time and probably money or you discard the grips and fit and tape new ones.

If you want to extend them again you have the same time/money/grip/tape/ question to consider plus the cost of extension pieces.

Best of luck with the work and nice to hear of a pro that is competent and enjoys his job.

    good idea.

my clubs are less than 12 months old so the grips will be re-used. He'll shorten my full set for €40.

Very good value considering he has to save the grips, not many pros would quote that low.

    regards,

I'd say he's like a lot of the other pro's and maybe has Feck all to do. Heard he's very busy in the evenings with lessons but early in the day is quiet.

Very nice lad and always there to help out

I really wouldn't advise shortening your driver, there is no need at all. I am 5' 9" so much the same as yourself and have always used a standard length driver. Moreover, I have never fitted or advised anyone unless exceptionally short to have a shorter driver. The correct length of irons and wedges for example is crucial as a consistent and precise impact with the ground is required. With the driver, this isn't an issue. Plus, shortening a good quality graphite shaft in a driver can play havoc with many of the technical attributes of the shaft itself.
