car insurance is up so have been checking around the past few days and by adding a driver to my policy quote with aviva it knocked nearly €200 off the quote just for myself. have health insurance with them already so not so if thats affecting it but check it out if your policy is coming up anytime soon.

If you add a "spouse" it will generally bring down your premium. Assuming that the person you are adding is not a liability.

So if your over 25 with no claims for example the premium will most likely go down.

I've been hunting around for car insurance in the last few days. The cheapest I could find was with aoninsure.ie.

I got mostly the same policy I had with Avivia at about €90 cheaper by going through them instead of renewing with Aviva. They used to be insure.ie as far as I can see. If you get an online quote ring them and ask them what else they can do for you on price. I got an extra €20 off by doing so at the time.

Adding my mother to my policy always drops the price by 23%-ish without fail. And plus it's handy to have her on if she wants to drive my motor!

Also saved 200Euro on my policy when I put the other half on my policy with aviva earlier this year.

Like other poster said, adding spouse usually makes insurance cheaper.
I used to own a quite high end/high BHP 3.2L sports convertible and I added my -then- girlfriend to the policy, she had a brand new full license with zero driving experience and instead of refusing to insure her on the car they made the policy 100 quid cheaper, go figure (10+ years NCD myself).
Anyway here's a topic on car insurance deals: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056562650

Just renewed the insurance on my car this week and once again AA Ireland was the cheapest (compared a good few).

Just a note of warning- if you have significant no-claims-bonus built up in your own name- Aviva may not in fact give you the best deal at all. I had a policy with Aviva for 12 years, up to the 9th of September. This year their quotation was over 260 more than my premium was last year- without any explanation whatsoever (aside from the comment 'our underwriting criteria has changed, and we now charge a higher premium for estate cars than previously). I shopped around- FBD, Axa, Zurich and resellers such as Tesco, AA, Chill, No-Nonsense etc. All of them were at least 150 less than my Aviva quote- one of them was almost 300 less- but I wasn't happy with what their comprehensive cover covered.

Moral of the story is- shop around, and insurance companies assume that if you're a current customer that they don't have to fight to keep you- you probably won't move.

After my treatment by Aviva- I've moved all my policies elsewhere. Idiots.

After my last experience with a Aviva I'd never ever get insured with them again. Have Google search on the problems people have with Aviva, its never ending.

thanks for all the info! it was new to me that adding a spouse would bring the premium down, i thought it would be the opposite!
aviva still seem to be the cheapest at €321, sertus (through quoteme) or 123.ie come in next at €365. will check out the details of all to see if the dearer two offer better t&cs.

Recently got a price of 598e from Axa for a 1.1 litre car. Full no claims bonus etc. I rang aon and got a price of of 340 from them which I eventually went with as I couldn't get better. It was with Aviva aswell. They couldn't match that price directly

Use brookers - they can get you cheeper insurance in the same company you have already equire...

BTW I was insured with aviva and I find them the worst insurer, especially customer service...
