    Hi,

I'm doing a clean install of XP on a friend's computer. He has the licence key but not the CD. Is it possible for me to download a copy of windows and use his key or use another XP cd with that key? Is there any other solution?

    Thanks!

Yes, although sometimes there can be trouble with mismatched versions.
But if e.g. you have an installation CD from a Dell and his is also a Dell there should be no issue.

Cheers - looks like I have to search Glasgow for a Dell XP cd!

Some Dells have a "Factory Restore" function.
It would be worth googling the specific make & model and "factory restore".

It would reinstall the original version of Windows, but you'd be strongly recommended to spend the few hours running Windows update and getting every service pack and security update since Dell released it.

You may even have an issue with a different SP XP Dell cd iirc, XP is stricter when it comes to serial acceptance than Windows 7 I think. May be wrong though, not done an XP reinstall for anyone in a good while now.

Make sure to get the right 'flavour' of XP as well as the right OEM brand . Dell XP Home instal wont successfully activate Dell XP Pro license and vice versa .

I don't think there are any problems if the SP is different as long as the right OEM version. XP really is a pain in the ass for this type of thing. Windows 7 is definitely more lax, as long as it's the right version (ultimate, home premium, pro etc) then it will work. There is no OEM specific crap which makes life so much easier.

just a heads up, make sure you have all the drivers backed up before you do the OEM install.
